I was in my local pushers place today and out of a collection he had a like new in box octagon barrel limited edition 1885 in 405 Winchester. I loved the heck out of it, but the 405 put me off. For those in the know, is there anyway to make this ammo not in original 405 cases? I really want to get it but if I cant shoot it on sunny afternoons there is no point.

Gary Reeder makes many of his wildcats from 405win cases, it probably is not that hard to find. He may be a decent source for them. It is essentially a 414 superXLsupermag, the ultimate .41. I use the 300gr bullets in my 414sm.

That has been on my short list of rifles for a long time. Think Teddy Roosevelt. The additional cool factor is being able to use 41 mag bullets. Brass is out there if you keep your eyes open. Plus I've periodically seen some Hornady loaded ammo floating around recently as well.

I've got lots and lots of 405 Winchester Brass.
I'm probably going to sell some on here. I've just got to decide whether or not to sell a New 24" Encore Barrel so chambered.
My Ruger #1 405 WCF isn't going anywhere...

Trey.... long serving president of the Hub City Rifle & Pistol Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, continuing through its move tangent the western levee of the Atchafalaya Basin, and former bench rest competitor Carroll Green esteemed his Winchester Model 1885 .405 Winchester, from what I saw a fast & tight shooter. Graf's gets 405 Win brass in, every once in awhile. Got 2 boxes around a month ago. Out of stock right now. Sign up for a back in stock notice.

Is it the hunter model with the crescent butt and short barrel? No sir. Seemed to be a flat butt, short octogonal barrel. Just says "Limited Edition" I think. It did not say what limited edition it is.

I have the same rifle as you. It was limited edition and I believe it could be had in other cartridge's also, 30-40 Krag being one of them. As far as other brass, yes you can. ".405 Win. Basic (BELL) or, 7X65R Brenneke. The Brenneke case can be annealed and taper expanded to .420 dia., trimmed square, F/L sized and fireformed or the case can be fireformed, with cornmeal, in the .405 trim die. 30-40 Krag cases also work well for a short version of the .405. Form as with the 7X54 case" The above is verbatim from John J Donnelly, The Handloaders Manual of cartridge conversions. Reeder got a bunch from Hornady a while ago, something like 20,000 rounds? (not sure of that figure but he got a bunch) He may have some left, not sure, a phone call will tell you. Grafs does get some in from time to time, Like what was mentioned put your name on the list for notifications. This is a really nice rifle, Mine is a dedicated cast bullet shooter. In between some other's it has taken whitetail deer, and hog. It may even accompany me into the U.P. of Michigan next fall. Enjoy yours you will, cartridge and gun just takes you back in time. Crash
