Fiance called me over to her place to take care of a snappin' turtle that had taken over her back patio. She was afraid to let her ankle-bitin' little dawg outside. Not a huge turtle, about 20 pounds, but VERY aggressive: Here's what a 357 Glaser Safety Slug will do to a snapper's head:

By law and convention, I am required to scold you for the random killing of a reptile. However, I am ignoring my obligation because it looks like you've dropped some lbs. and you need to replenish - hope you ate her!

Shot distance was about 10 feet. I didn't want to stand TOO closely! Still felt a little blowback. Snakes, turtles and such don't bother me, but I can't have snappers or poisonous snakes where I or my loved ones live. And I don't think I've lost weight - you just forgot how fat I am!

Git yourself a turtle as big as a number three wash tub, hold him up, and have your photo snapped.
The bigger the turtle the smaller you look.
Boge killed a big old turtle.

Boge....I guess I don't blame you, but I'm a turtle nut and have a couple as pets. Here's my male. His name is "Lucky": Mine are eastern box turtles though and don't have an agressive bone in them. I know snappers are a different story. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Being one who has a severe aversion to reptiles, I find him actually cute.

Turtles don't even seem like reptiles to me.....even though they technically are. -Lee www.singleactions.com

And snappers are a different story. Lucky's a beautiful turtle - nicely colored.

I too am very fond of box turtles. I have been known to stop next to a paved road to help one cross without being run over (believe it or not, there are miscreants who will run over turtles intentionally). [Note: box turtles live their entire lives in a relatively small range of perhaps a few hundred yards in diameter; therefore never remove a box turtle far from where you find it]
That said, I agree with Boge on the matter of snappers, or alligator turtles. They are anything but mild and I have found them to be quite aggressive. Actually, the one he dispatched is small compared to many I've tangled with in the past.
I, too have heard they're good eating, but on account of the looks of the things, I've never tried.

I grew up with grandparents that lived in Louisiana and I have eaten manny snappers. Really good actually. Hey Lee, what do you feed box turtles? I could never keep them alive as a kid. All the rain we had a few weeks ago in Middle Tennessee forced a lot of reptiles to migrate, I guess. I have seen many turtles and snakes dead in the road lately.
