LOW QUAIL NUMBERS THROUOUT SOUTH TEXAS, APPARRENTLY THE EXTREME HEAT DURING THE SUMMER KILLED THE EGGS Seems every year has some catastrophe that hammers quail, drought, hail, pigs eating all of the eggs, too many predators, what not else. Life is hard for quail, too bad they are a great bird...

Rey, if I had wine & tamales for lunch I wouldn't know a quail from a turkey & my first shot would go straight in the air, I'd be laying flat on my back for sure. The one year my wife & I wintered down in south Texas I was hog hunting with some guys & we stopped in a little cafe, I think in Dixon, Texas for some lunch & they went through enough hot sauce & jalapeno's to kill a large hog. They would bite into a burger & shake their head & say "man that's good". Not for me!

Oops, I think the town was Nixon, believe it was east of San Antonio! Dick Nixon is in fact east of SA. In the Gonzales, Stockdale area. I’ve played several gigs in Nixon.

WENT TO PDM WEDNESDAY (2/14/24) AND LEFT THIS MORNING (SATURDAY 2/17/24) AFTER A MID-MORNING BREAKFAST. WAS LOOKING FOR A SPIKE BUCK (NEVER SAW ONE), HOGS (SAW A SOUNDER YESTERDAY BUT A KILL ELUDED US) AND COW NILGAI. WEDNESDAY WAS OVERCAST, WINDY AND SLOW. THURSDAY WAS ALSO SLOW. WAS DRIZZLY AND WET ALL DAY YESTERDAY AND COLDER AND STILL DRIZZLY THIS MORNING. THE NILGAI WERE NOT OUT AND ABOUT IN WET WEATHER. WTH, NO HARM IN DRIVING AROUND AND LOOKING, SO OUT WE WENT DRIVING AROUND THIS MORNING, ME, MY COUSIN BOB, MY Compadre OSCAR AND MY FELLOW LESSEE JAIME, OSCAR WAS LOOKING FOR A COW NILGAI AND I WAS ARMED AND DANGEROUS WITH A SAVAGE 99 IN 22 SAVAGE HP LOOKING FOR A SPIKE. WE HEADED EAST AND ON THE NORTH FENCE LINE ARE A BULL AND COW NILGAI, YOUNG BUT NOT BABIES, LOOKING AT US. ME AND JAIME ID THE COW AS A COW NILGAI AND TELL OSCAR TO GET OUT AND SHOOT. THE 270 GERMAN WEATHERBY MAG DID ITS JOB, THE COW STRUGGLED INTO THE BRUSH AND DROPPED DEAD WITHIN 40 YARDS OR SO OF THE POI. MY Compadre MAY HAVE COST THAT YOUNG BULL HIS FIRST PIECE OF ... LIVE WEIGHT ON THE COW WAS 212.4lbs, OUGHT TO BE MIGHTY FINE VENISON. PULLED HER OUT OF THE BRUSH WITH A ROPE AND MY TRUCK. SEE PICTURES:

LOW QUAIL NUMBERS THROUOUT SOUTH TEXAS, APPARRENTLY THE EXTREME HEAT DURING THE SUMMER KILLED THE EGGS We’ve started addressing this on our Missouri spread. At the risk of sounding like a shameless flower child, it is indisputable, even to a generational cattleman like me that the restoration and maintenance of old native grasses will directly impact and increase quail, turkey, cotton tail, and even deer populations. It’s a years long process but will eventually destroy our dependence on hay, even in the winter, increase the quality of our beef and, my favorite part, restore the quail populations. I’m hoping to have a good lead on this effort by the time my son is old enough to wield a 12 gauge.

2/21/24 @ 8:00 p.m. CST: DENVER CAME IN THIS MORNING, NO HOG NOR SPIKE SIGHTINGS. WILL TRY AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS IN THE MORNING AND THEN I NEED TO HEAD HOME.
ALTHOUGH THE SEASON ENDS ON 2/29/24 TOMORROW MAY BE MY LAST HUNT AS I HAVE OTHER MATTERS TO TEND TO.
FOR SUPPER WE HAD THE TENDERLOINS OFF THE COW NILGAI MY Compadre OSCAR KILLED LAST SATURDAY. COOKED MEDIUM OVER MESQUITE COALS, EXCELLENT.
