CONGRATULATIONS again on yet another great adventure! I have to say, looking at the picture, that appears to be some really open country for moose hunting, especially with a revolver.

Thats AWESOME. I struck out during the regular season this year. Still have an archery cow tag that goes until Thanksgiving. But no handgun...

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of your comments. This was my third moose and the second one that I've taken with the Shoemaker's. I took my first moose in 2019 in B.C. with a Browning 71 in .348 Winchester. I took the second moose with the Shoemaker's near King Salmon, AK with a .50 Alaskan lever gun. Tank was nice enough to write a nice article about the gun/hunt and it was featured in the September 2021 issue of Guns magazine. Here's a link to that article if you're interested in reading about that hunt: .50 Alaskan Moose ArticleEven though I had taken a couple of nice moose with lever guns, I still wanted to take one with a handgun so I booked another hunt for moose with the Shoemaker's immediately following the 2020 hunt. Moose hunting is addictive, but this HAS to be the last one! Thanks again guys!

Sweet! My mouth is watering!! Looks like you had perfect weather! At least for the picture! We had a tough season here north of Fairbanks. Lots of high wind, fog, sideways rain, etc. I didn't see a bull in a week. My buddy and his son did get one a few days later in a weather window. Congrats, must have been a fun, adrenaline filled stalk!

Snyd, I flew into camp on Thursday so the first day of hunting was on Friday. Friday and Saturday were miserable with fog, wind, and sideways rain. The weather broke on Sunday morning and we could see for literally "miles". When we spotted this moose so far away we had no idea that we'd ever catch up to him. We ran in the direction that he was heading in order to try to cut him off and as luck would have it he made a 90 degree turn and started walking toward us! When we ran into one another, he was less than 50 yards away and about 150 yards away from our tent! Since the tent was next to the landing strip, it was a short pack-out to where the meat could be flown out. It sure did seem that we were "gifted" this moose! We had a visitor in camp that night. Taj Shoemaker had stopped by in his Maule bush plane and flew all of the meat back to base camp. However, we still had the moose rack/skull and cape in camp with us. A little after midnight a brown bear grabbed the moose rack and took off with it! Guide, hunter, and packer all armed themselves and headed out into the misty rain and darkness in our long underwear and crocs to defend our camp and retrieve the moose skull. The perpetrator had stopped just a few feet from camp. With 3 headlamps shining in his face and some verbal abuse he finally decided to let go of the moose rack but he wouldn't leave our camp, he just kept circling. My guide finally had enough and let loose a string of obscenities and fired a round from his 9.3 X 62 rifle into the ground beside the bear. The three of us then advanced toward the bear and he finally gave up and ran off. I'm not sure if the bear was scared off from the gun fire or if my guide had hurt his feelings. My fearless guide stood guard for the next couple of hours to ensure that the bear wouldn't return; and he didn't. All part of the adventure!

Keep this up and you'll have to turn the garage into a walk in freezer. Congrats again.
