I’ve been seeing a lot of variation in my starline 475 linebaugh brass, closest it gets to full length is about 15 thousandths short, most is 25-30 thousandths short. I see other folks on here have noted the same in some of the other brass that they offer. Anybody know why this is? And does anybody have new Hornady 475 brass they could check to see if it is closer to 1.4” out of the box?

I have 4 unopened boxes of Hornaday. I'll check it tomorrow.

Awesome thanks sir! At your convenience. I may buy some Hornady if they are more consistently full length, I’ve never heard a complaint about them.

I usually trim to the shortest length in a batch for a consistent crimp, but the last few boxes have been all over the place. 32H&R, 357 Max, 45 Colt, and 500 Linebaugh, so it's not a specific cartridge.

That’s pretty frustrating. Maybe I’m missing something obvious but if I’m going to have to trim a bunch of brass I’d rather trim back to full length rather than trim short brass shorter.

If you're Starline brass is shorter than their listed minimum length it's worth a call to Starline. They will replace it.

The one thing I don't know is if you get to keep the short brass. I could actually make use of TOO SHORT brass for the 475 as I'd like to load Lee's 445artin LFN in my "short cylinder" FA83. I'm going to need to trim brass one way or another. Might as well start with "bad" brass.

They didn't want the short ones back. I still have them for when I get around to getting a 50sp or a GNR built.

I’m going to look into this if my next lot is oversized, I’ve already messed with most of what I have. I’m on back order with them, who knows when they will do another run but if it’s this erratic I’ll certainly try to get some replacement brass. Thanks for this info!

I just happened to have both a box of brass and a dial caliper laying next to my desk from previous projects, waiting to be put away!

I forgot to measure my Hornaday brass. Mine are old though. I think the price tag says $32

If it's about .110 too short it looks like you'll be able to make good money selling 480 brass stamped as .475. 💰😎
