My son called today and this weekend is our early bear season; Sat. & Sun.. Only Kids and senior citizens (Geezers) can shoot a bear, but it's a great early season warm up for the dogs and a great social event.

Beautiful day Sat. and a 14 year old's first bear. 400lb.+ boar.

There weren't as many bears there when I backpacked and bowhunted there. Do recall thinking there are some very beary looking places. Bear numbers still climbing in Elk and Cameron counties Penn, am assuming adjacent counties too. My legs and lungs no longer W.Va. worthy. Sure makes me smile to see the kids in the thick of it.

Bear was treed and shot with a .223 rifle; twice. Bear fell out of tree and two of the dog handlers took it on with handguns; one a.44mag. Problem with the .44 was the fellow was using ammo "some old guy gave him" and it did not perform too well; it got the job done but upon skinning this was discovered. See photo coming from tdbarton.

Our bear population has fluctuated over the years, mainly due to the Mange, and the seasons have been adjusted accordingly. We are fortunate to still be able to get around in the hills; just a lot more slowly than back when and a walking stick is now our friend. Our son is a go getter and loves chasing the hounds!
