I've heard a few stories about how a ".44 mag wasn't enough" in a handgun for bear. But I've always countered with; "What kind of ammo were they using?" I'd say that the ammo used above was likely a handload, and mild to boot.

Pretty sure you are right. Son said the fellow who shot the bear with the .44 told him "some old guy gave him the ammo". Nuff said!!

I've shot a few bear with the 44, in magnum and special guise. Never had one stop on the skin before.
