The 38 special thread got me to thinking, I like to shoot light loads for most of my 44 special plinking. I've been loading various bullets over various light charges of bullseye and unique. So far, I'm really liking the RCBS 44-250-K over either 4.4 or 4.8 grains Bullseye. I've also loaded the Ranchdog 432-265-RF over those charges. Not to mention 5.5 grains of Unique under an RCBS 44-240-SWC. I have a lot more experimenting to do, and a few other bullet moulds to play with. I ain't talking about the skeeter load... I'm talking about the lighter stuff, the all day at the range plinking stuff.
So what's everyone else's favorite light 44 Special loads?

I've a class of loads I call, frog smackin' loads. When you get to cartridges as large as a 44spec, quite a few gun chores can be done with light loads. With a C.A. 44spec Bulldog here, you tend , gravitate to lighter loads naturally I think ! So I guess the most used here, on 7grs of Unique, has been a 180-185gr DEWC. I'd be ok with this as a defensive load except it takes too much fussing to get a speedloaders worth into the cylinder on a reload.

I shoot a 215 gr SWC over either 6.0 gr. of 700X or 6.6 gr. of HP-38. Both are super accurate in several different .44s.

When I HP a MIHA light 44 mold … it’s 185grs with PC and Dick Thompson had mentioned WST yrs back in one of his invaluable posts. I use 5.5grs

6.0gr of W231 and a 429215 or 429421 (or actually copies of the originals) work for me in bulk...

Lately Ive been sticking with Powdercoated MP 432-256 or a Bayou 240 SWC (Hi-Tec) over 5.5/231, either in a special case or deep seated in mag brass

Some awesome loads being shared here, thank you all for sharing. I'll have to find some of these powders mentioned to try. I've used W231 before I really liked it, but I used it all up right at the beginning of the last shortage and haven't picked more up yet to try in the 44 Special.

I tried Trailboss in the .44 Special, & it gives a nice, mild everyday load, with very little chance of a double charge.

HP38 has been easier to find of late than W231 but they are the same, identical powder from the same source just packaged separately and as available as any powder I have seen out there of late...

I use a commercial cast coated 240gr LSWC with 6.6gr of Unique for a plinking/target/general shooting load in my .44Spl revolvers...a pair of flat top BlackHawks, a SAA clone and a 5 shot Taurus stainless steel DA revolver
I also shoot the same bullet with 7.5gr of Unique in my two flat tops. None of my .44Magnum revolvers have ever sèen a single round of .44Spl ammunition.

I haven't mentioned it in awhile, a buck-n-ball load I came up with. Matt's bullets has a 135gr button bullet. My data in the basement.. but Bullseye with a Walters Wad on top, then 8 shot to the base of that 135gr bullet. A multi-varmint load. POI will be low. Practical ? I'm not sure myself ! Fun to work up, yes.
