My summer time load is the Miha 245 gr HP & 5.5 grs of WST, great for ground squirrels, rock chucks & more than a few carp. Blows them clear out of the water! I switch to the Skeeter load in the fall, that's 7.5 grs of Unique using the same 245 gr HP. I've taken 5-6 deer with that load & it's a one shot ending. Couple of Montana whitetails taken with the Skeeter load. The doe was facing me head on & was the only shot I had, shot with my 7.5" 44 special was about 55 yds (I think) deer was gone after the recoil, and so was part of it's head. The buck jumped up beside me in tall grass, I shot him broadside as he ran up a little hill & he stopped, I gave him a second one through both lungs & he ran off the other side. He was laying just off the opposite side about 15 yds. Both shots had hit him through the lungs. Dick

I have not really studied 44 Special load data in many years, because I have a few loads that just always seem to work in any 44 Special I've owned. Any time I've gotten a new 44 Special, I try one of these first. If it shoots (it always does), I leave it at that. Some are pretty light, some are low/medium. The Herco load is about as "hot" as I load the Flat Top. Still very comfortable to shoot, but the HP38/W231 loads are very pleasant. All are very accurate.
Charter Bulldogs, Taurus 44Xs, Rossi 720, Flat Top Blackhawk: 429421, 5.5 grains of HP38/W231 429421, 6.5 grains of Unique
Flat Top Blackhawk: 429421, 5.5 or 6.2 grains of HP38/W231 429421, 7 grains of Unique 429421, 8.5 grains of Herco
BOLD = most-used loads.
Sometimes I fill the lube groove with 50/50 Alox/Beeswax, but usually use 45-45-10. Tried some PC, but its more work than necessary, as the tumble lube has never failed in this application. The gooey grease lube is more work than I want, but I love the gooey, greasy feel it leaves on my revolvers for some reason.
I have a really neat little 210 grain Arsenal RFN that shoots great, but it's easier to just cast more 429421s for everything, especially in Bulldogs, because lighte than 240 or 250 grains shoots low.

6.0 grs of Green Dot with the MP 432-256 PB (the old Keith design). -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time" Are your Green Dot loads together in one place here on the Forum? Should be a sticky…. Seems like I inquired about this before but the old timers thing…. I've never consolidated them. But a quick rule of thumb - 1.0 grain less of Green Dot under a Unique load gives damn near the same velocity. And I've found this to hold across many handgun cartridges....from .32 H&R Mag up through .45 Colt. Hope this helps. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Greg, looks like about 750 fps with the flat top shorty. I also have a 5.5" bisley & the limited 7.5" bisley, they are a little quicker.

Been a while since I've been into reloading. Been working, working on my website, and fishing a lot lately. I appreciate all the responses to my query. I'll have to find some other powders to experiment with other than Bullseye and Unique, not that it doesn't work.

I actually "invented" the 5.5 W231 and 240SWC load a couple decades ago - or so I thought at the time. It wasn't until the internet that I discovered that it was actually a pretty popular recipe, and I hadn't considered deep-seating it in .44 mag until I started coming around here.
It's still my most used 44 Special load.
