needsmostuff, I just noticed what looks like a thumb ledge on the right hand side. Are you a lefty? So the Colt is a trooper. I think the Colt 3five7 and the Colt trooper came out a couple of years apart, mid 50's. I believe the 3five7 had the early trigger work that later went into the Python. The Python came a couple of years after the other two. Nope , I'm a righty. Those grips have the same ledge mirrored on both sides. Very comfortable. The Colt E/I frame story is not a case of different guns coming out years apart. More of a story of the same gun evolving. Started as an Army Special in the 20's. Army did not buy them so they changed the name to the Official Police to market to law enforcement which worked well. Then to make a target gun they added the adjustable sights and the Officers model was born. Then it was magnumized and the Officers model became "the 357" and it was then the premier revolver they offered. Marketing got involved and prettied it up with a rib on the barrel and a name change to Python. At that point they feared two premium level guns would be confusing so the 357 got a demotion and less finish with a name change to Trooper. Back to marketing to law enforcement. Some agencies only allowed 38 spl. hence the 38 Trooper. Confusing and convoluted for sure. A few minor changes thru the years but if you peek under their hoods they are all the same gun with all the same parts. Python owners claim smoother actions, but on a good day even the lowly Trooper (or Official Police) can be exceptional. Trooper MK3 & Mk5 ARE of course different guns that superseded the original E/I frame guns. .

Interesting.
I always wondered about the 38 special in the Trooper. I have the Trooper, Trooper III, and the Trooper V; all in 357mag. I knew that the Trooper could handle 357mag and the 38special both, like all 357mags. So I couldn't figure out why they would mark it for 38 special only.
Change the label and the cop shop buys it. Makes sense. Kinda.

They were the first centerfire handguns I ever fired. My dad's brothers were all SC LEOs and I learned on their issued S&W Model 10's. I have a Model 10-6, 4" HB and love shooting it all I can. It also seems to like my 170 gr SWC handloads just fine too.

My Great Uncle left his 1905 model 10 to me in an old 3Persons holster, He was the first Game Warden in Levy County Florida.(that's #1) I have a S&W model 15 that's the first handgun I ever purchased.(#2) But my favorite is a 3 inch tapered barrel Chief's special, with stag grips and a Tyler grip adapter. The little Chiefs is up to 2 deer, and 3 hogs, all under 7yards and all under 100lbs.(160gr full wadcutter,5gr unique - the only load I shoot in it) Will always have a 38 special.

A share from the field, sorta. A couple weeks ago had a 4 day weekend in the hills. Three friends, outwardly an odd bunch. A great nephew in mid-20's, then rest of us each 10-12 yrs apart on up to my 65yrs. Yet we all spoke the same language. A tacticool type weekend but the LCR 38 still went into my Carhart T-shirt pocket, or fleece vest pocket. The ALWAYS on me gun. Of the vast number and types of targets we shot, a kevlar helmet . A couple AR loads and a AK round were zinged thru it. But as we just put it back down and started away, I asked if all still had "EARS" on. With positive nods all around the LCR appeared and a 125gr Speer Blazer loading got its turn. BANG ! I expected it to come apart, drop to ground, etc.. It drilled in, pushed a 1" circle inward to inside of helmet like a 1/4", but didn't break thru. A Leatherman tool needed to pry and wiggle it back out. I've never seen a more perfect mushroom. It was expanded about all it could, the jacket stayed wrapped over and back under the lead outer edge, no petals could break off. All were impressed.

Hey Gunny , If that's a P JR. I'm going the same way , with a little less barrel. This one loves any ammo I have put in it but mostly I have been going thru a bunch of pulled 125 HPs I ended up with . Funn shootin as there is no real investment in the bullets . It also loves double ended wadcutters nested in reddot, bullseye or unique. Compact Single Six sized but still has the challenge of being a fixed sight Single Action. What a perfect, fun, PPP! Now you’ve got me looking at those 3.5” P jr’s. How does it feel in the hand? Does it have enough heft that it doesn’t feel like those German pot metal .22 single actions from the 60’s?

There's certainly NOTHING, not to like about the 38 Spl. Versatile, accurate, economical. Seems like it checks all the boxes!
I probably haven't fired 100 rounds of 38 Spl. in 40 years. The last ones I fired was about a month ago to empty 10 cases to go along with 40 other empties so I could trim them to the 380 German cartridge. I'll always reach for one of my 32-20's first.

Always had an affection for the 38 Special. Carried one for over 10 years in the AF.

Looking forward to playing with a new Single Six, 38+P max 5 shot from WellsFirearms. I’m loading up a couple different accuracy loads with medium and heavier weight bullets.

Was yours converted from rimfire? New model? I am trying to figure out if I want to have my single six converted or go after one of those model p jr’s.

I just picked up a beater 22 mag only single six for the conversion. Got it cheap, and the 22MAG cylinder works perfectly on a nice SS I already had. Hoping to get it soon🤞
