I have been having this ongoing dilemma. I’m in the mood to buy another double action 44 magnum but cannot for the life of me decide between a Smith 629 or wait for the new Colt Anaconda to pop up around my location. Be mostly a fun range gun so longer barrel choices are fine. Indoor range of course but outdoor range extending out to 100 yards on steel.
Although the Colt is stronger and heavier or “beefier” as some call it and could probably handle a diet of much heavier loads my Super Blackhawks are the work horses in my 44 magnum stable so I probably won’t be shooting heavy and/or + P ammo from this gun all that much. I can find the Smith in my area brand new for less than $1000 but Colt Python prices which I extrapolate to be Anaconda pricing is in the $1500 range.
I will not be putting a scope on this gun nor would I be hunting with this. For any of you with experience with both revolvers what are your opinions based on experience? I thank you for your suggestions.

Both are excellent guns. Hard to go wrong with either.
The Colt is definitely larger and stronger. It also doesn't have the horrific safety.
The S&W has hung in there since the 44 Magnum was introduced for good reason.
Only you can decide what's right for you.
My carry 44 Magnum is an extremely tight and well made S&W 69. I bought the Tromix Thumb Release to cover the safety and it's good to go...

Brother John as allways being very brave with sombody elses money ! I to like both guns, But if you are not planning on hunting with it, I would save 500.00 bucks and buy the Smith. I don't care for the stupid lock either, But is still a fine revolver. If the Price was the same I would get a 6 inch Colt. That 8 incher is just to damn big for me !...tj

I vote Anaconda, new or old.
Just not a big N frame fan.

My vote for a 6 inch Anaconda. I've found the new ones to be very accurate and with a trigger job from Mike Heffron the best DA/SA trigger in the business. My only gripe is that the cylinders are very long, too long to fill with 44 mag but it doesn't seem to be hurting accuracy.

Forgive me for answering the question not asked...
While I love the smoothness of the Smith and Wesson (and own two Model 25s in 45 Colt), and the aesthetics of the Colt Python-style barrel, due to the easier kitchen-table gunsmithing capability of the Ruger GP100 and Ruger Super Redhawk, I choose those platforms for life.

I like the looks of the Anaconda and the one I have shot was excellent. I'll eventually get one with a 6" barrel.
That said though, don't discount the Redhawk with a good trigger job. Still less money than either of the other ones, but brute strong.

Not going to hunt or carry much... Try to handle the different ones you are considering and go with whatever feels best to you. The S&W 629 PC Magnum Hunter and Colt Anaconda are two of the better looking DA .44 mags available and each would serve well for range or hunting.

Does anyone know if the old Anacondas are similar to the new ones as far as strength is concerned?

Does anyone know if the old Anacondas are similar to the new ones as far as strength is concerned? I believe the new ones are stronger. They are definitely beefier. I've read on the Colt Forum that steels have been upgraded. But, I won't repeat what type I've read they use because I can't verify it. I don't need more gun strength. But, I sure appreciate that increased cylinder length. What a wonderful 45 Colt could be used on the New Anaconda. Never hurts to hope...
