How many zeroes in a Brazilian??……kidding.
I picked up an old SW 1917 from 45man in,…..you guessed it 45, 45acp. I’d been looking for a Colt or SW for a few years. Just something for a house gun or beat around the ranch gun. I missed out on a Colt years ago when the fiancé worked at a gunshop and regretted it ever since.
I got this a few weeks ago and the carry up or timing was a bit slow. A quick call to Jack at JRH and he explained how to advance the carry up. An afternoon of slow going a little bit at a time, reassemble, a little bit more, reassemble, so on and so on. Finally got it to lock up just right. Then took a hacksaw to the barrel, and belt sander to the grip frame. Hand crowned the muzzle, round butted the grip frame just a bit. Not actually true N frame round butt.
Bought a set of Pachmayr grippers and butchered them into a reasonable facsimile of boot grips to see if I’d like the profile and feel. Then loaded some loads with 230gr. JHP and 217gr. Sixshot SWC/HP’s that I’d acquired for the wife’s 45Colt. Shot both loads at 20 yards using a rifle ramp sight electrical taped to the barrel to check for sight regulation. My guess was almost spot on, I was 2.5” low at 20 yards.
I had found a short ribbed front sight made by Parker Hale that would work as a replacement front sight and the height was very close to what I needed. Actually just a bit taller, so filing to bullet impact will be done at the range. I mounted the front sight today, liked the way the Pachmayr boot grips felt and converted a set of square butt Ajax grips to boot grips as well.
All in all I like it, it still needs sanding and polishing to remove filing marks and some of the pits. Tinker gave me the inspiration with his shorty home built revolvers, and 45man provided the base gun,…….it’s a keeper.
tinker should come in here in a bit and post pics.
