Been a while since I posted any new guns in the Gallery so here goes.... Not too new but here's a .500 S&W Special that David Clements built. I picked it up from a shop in VA that purchased a large collection of guns from one of David's active customers. Built on a mid-frame flat top it's about as much cartridge as you can get in the medium sized frame. I wrote David about it before the purchase and he indicated that the pistol got "not fun to shoot" in a hurry and recommended nothing more than about 440gr cast bullets at 900fps in the load data he sent along. Same velocities as the .50GI but will take a larger bullet. The gun was full carbona blue by Turnbull and has a 5 shot cylinder. A nice touch is the short base pin to allow full ejection of the long cartridges. Don't know who did the beautiful walnut grips with a blind screw. It's not exactly as I would have had it built and if David was still working it would go back for changes but grateful I get to take care of it for a while. I can add the Bowen rear sight... This is what David said "It is a shortened .500 S&W. Only built 2 and designed conversion to handle the Corbon factory loads made at the time which are same pressure as .44 Mag. I had to go to an exotic steel for cylinder to make that possible. Both guns are on midframe flattops." Would like to thank "Rivercane" for trimming the .500 S&W brass down to the correct length for me. He did a great job! Waiting on brass from Starline... I can't wait to shoot it as soon as things thaw out a little. Even the hammer is carbona blue and must have had the sides relieved as there's no wear. That's a big hole and David's lovely crescent head ER is always a welcome sight. Not ANY more room for the rim.... Finally a look at a loaded dummy round next to a .45 Colt round. Both are loaded with 300gr bullets.

Greg, that should get interesting quick. Can you post a picture of the forcing cone?

Nothing tops a mid frame flat top for me, and this one is incredible.

Very nice gun and exquisite grip panels but 440gr at 900 fps might still be a bit "brisk" in that mid frame five shot. 440s at 1,050 in my 5" FA83 500 JRH conversion is about all the fun I can handle any more. Paul

QUITE interesting piece there. I've been considering something pretty similar myself. I'd love to know what you find to be the top end of the practically controllable realm on bullet weight and velocity from that little rig.

Id think a 350ish grain bullet would make more sense, but it looks like a fun gun to play with. And a lot easier to find brass for than the 50GI.

I have several 325ish gr molds that should do well. There are surely better choices for a working gun but for a retirement project it should be fun. Plus it's simply a lovely revolver... Chucking those big slugs slow and hearing them hit a gong is very satisfying.... Plus you can have a smoke between pulling the trigger and hearing that "whop"!

I'm curious to see how a 400 LFN from a standard grip .50 Spl with 6.5" barrel handles at 900 FPS.

I can not get the idea of a 4" RW Alum framed round butt Bisley in a big thumper round such as this out of my head. I have no need, heck I can run heavy bullets in several 45 colt Bisleys I already own for the same effect at no cost (I have the guns and molds already). The 500 Bowen Special (again I have said before why Id opt for the 500L instead), 50GI (lacks the option for more power even if desired), this 500 S&W Special, so many options. Just time and kids in college block the path...
It looks like it would be a fun gun to tinker with for sure...
