Looking for sone info from all the knowledge here. I’ve come across a shooter grade second year production three screw flattop in .357 locally. I’ve always loved the look of the lil gun conversions I’ve seen in John taffin books and the ones here. This gun would most likely be converted if I got it. What’s a good price for it? The seller is asking 850 or has a few trade interests. thanks guys

It's overpriced, just like everything is today, however I just paid 900 for a 1959 old model flattop 357 a few weeks ago locally, because I wanted it, yes, overpriced, but I wanted it, so it's mine now. I think the days of "is it worth it" , are gone for awhile, it's now , "do I want it" .

That is cheaper than what a couple three screws I have will be when I list them. If it is a second year gun it may be a type 1 gun. If it is if will have s small striated ejector button and the neat front sight with the waves in it. Those are my favorite Types of flat tops.

Don’t remember price, possibly a bit over $100. Recall paying $140 for a new S&W M-19. The Blackhawk sported a 4-5/8” barrel, and the light wavy front ramp serrations you describe. As I recall it had the Micro rear sight. What nailed my attention? The serial number: 357. As I was hard into shooting the sixguns I had, I didn’t buy. David Bradshaw |

Thanks for all the info guys. This forum never disappoints with such a broad and varied membership with a usable input On pretty much anything six or five gun related. i may try and make a trade with him which will only cost me more money because a phone call to Andy horvath will be next! I’m sure I’ll seek input on a lil gun project as well if i do get this one. thanks again to everyone’s input on value.

If you get it, look at the serial number and do a little research on Ross numbered flat tops. There was a small batch of yearly flat tops that had a 1 inadvertently stamped in front of the number and a collector with the last name of Ross caught the error. Best not to cut up a Ross numbered gun but sell and use one of the other types of flat tops,

Ok, I'll play devils advocate. A Ruger .357 FT with a serial number of 5724 should be a Type ! early FT. It was built in 1956. There were only about 6300 Type 1's built. Depending upon condition, it might be worth more than the $850 asking price. A Type 1 is sought after by collectors. Definitely not a "Ross" variation, as they all have a 5 digit serial,, while having the Type 1 features. BTW; Bill Ross was not a lady. HE was a collector.  Personally,, I know collectors who'd prefer to NOT see it custom modified that couldn't be restored to it's original "as shipped" condition. And if you aren't objectionable to a "protected ears" gun for a custom project,, a collector would likely swap you a later produced gun for a Type 1. |

He’s interested in a trade offer I have. I’ve got roughly 800 in the gun to trade. I will be honest if I do grab this flattop it will become a lil gun by Andy horvath. Going to give Andy a call today and ask a few questions about building me a lil gun price and current lead time along with options. Mr taffin along with everyone else pictures of lil guns over the years have always made me drool really look like great little light packing guns and he’s blueing is exceptional

Your gun to do as you wish. And yes,, Andy's work is VERY nice. If you get the FT & do have it customized,, let me know. We have a collector who keeps a list of the known guns out there,, AND if this one gets work done,, we'd like to properly document what became of it. We do not put any names with guns or anything,, just the model & serial.
