Ryan Ross and John Powers have both built Ruger single actions for me recently. Both very nice guns. Both gunsmiths have very different personalities and approaches to custom work.
I bought a great sheriff model vaquero from Bobby Tyler. It has fewer special customizations but it's a heck of great gun. If you don't want the far out custom bits, it's an excellent way to go.
Currently I have Rugers out to Andy Horvath, Jack Huntington and Alan Harton. custom jobs including anaconda barrel on Blackhawk, s&w barrel on Blackhawk and s&w rear sight on vaquero.
I don't expect to work with Linebaugh or Bowen directly. I do own an awesome single six built by Bowens shop. I own two Clements guns and both are great but were bought from another owner. Would like to own a Gallagher gun in my collection.
Most of the old guard appears to be winding down. I chose to work with Ryan Ross, John Powers and Bobby Tyler because I can develop customer relationships and over time they will only get better. Fermin encouraged this attitude and it's worked out well.
Just my experience.

Rowen is 5 years out on grips right now, but I totally agree. I have a Bowen right now that needs Rowen grips! I’m on the list and happy to wait. Wow. Good for Rob having the work. It will be worth the wait. A few years back I sent him some Dall Sheep horn from a Ram I'd shot. I think it was only a few months and that was because after cutting the slabs of horn they needed to be soaked/flattened/dried, etc. It will be worth the wait. Rob had me send him a tracing of my hand along with the gun so he could get the palm swell right. They are perfect and the fit to the gun could be no better. Here are the Rowen Sheep Horn grips on the Gallagher built 500L that was finished up by Bowen after John's unfortunate passing, may he Rest in Peace. All threads need pics right!! ![](https://i.ibb.co/F7gmjV5/P6060007.jpg) ![](https://i.ibb.co/dbNYp6t/P6060024.jpg) ![](https://i.ibb.co/svr6CDJ/P6060025.jpg) ![](https://i.ibb.co/NV91LTq/P6060028.jpg)

It's going to depend on what work you want done
If you're looking to have a custom 5-shot (or any) cylinder made, your choices are fewer than otherwise
Can someone list the makers of custom cylinders?

Well yes, and there's the Lee family workshop - but that's not what I mean. Which gunsmith shops, which gun builders who a fellow would call to get a custom revolver built - who are the shops where this is an everyday scene at the milling machine... ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52433326864_2c1627e791_h.jpg) Which of the current outfits (who are still taking orders, who will still build guns, who do their own work) are building custom guns from the cylinder out? It's a distinction, and I don't know the answer. I'm thinking that the answer should be available from the voices here in this group.

Bowen JRH Linebaugh (both of them)
Bowen and JRH have a pretty reasonable wait to boot. I’m sure there are others.

Any cylinder maker has to have the gun to make the cylinder Or it’s a stock Ruger cylinder

So I’ve never heard of anyone doing it. Blanks maybe……. JRH builds guns from the cylinder out from bar stock to blank to line bored cylinder, heat treatment and finish - to the client. That much I can confirm. And JRH is still in business, taking orders and producing new work.

John Powers built me a custom cylinder 25-20 Single Six.
Not too many building cylinders from scratch anymore.

I don't think I care if my gunsmith is sourcing his cylinder blanks from someone good who machines them in batches or if they lovingly manually machine them one at a time. Artisanal cylinders aren't gonna shoot any better or be any stronger. I do care that they're properly fitted, blocked, heat treated, timed, and aligned.
