I'll add my experience with Mr. Huntington. He did a small job for me (barrel swap and refinish) and I got the same personal attention as I would expect with a fully commissioned gun. He took the time to personally speak with me about my gun on multiple telephone calls. I appreciated that and wouldn't hesitate to call him for a big job.

5-7 years is a long time to wait on a custom gun and it is not for everybody. I just look at it this way. One, I am not sitting twiddling my thumbs 24/7 for seven years. I am doing life and ever day is full. Second, I don’t know about the rest of you but it is not like I don’t have anything else to shoot while I’m waiting. Third, if I am truly having a gun built just the way I want it and I am asking for something out if the ordinary “build menu” then I am willing to work with the time frames. I know it took over a year just to talk Hamilton into doing the #5 base pin latch on my #5 old model Ruger. I can live with that. If I can’t then I modify my wants or look to find someone else. No problem, it’s still a free country and to each his own.

I agree with you 100%. We all know most of the really good well-known gunsmiths are nearing the end of their career or have left already. And with age I'm guessing they're not as fast as they used to be. I'm still waiting on a Big Horn Armory rifle and probably won't see that until I hit the 2-year mark from the order date. And those are semi-custom more like a Freedom Arms. I'm willing to wait to get exactly what I want or keep my eye out for one of the ones that end up back on the market. They show up somewhat frequently across the auction sites or just word of mouth.

My first gun from John Gallagher took close to 5 or so years. I cant remember, honestly. I look at it like this. I have enough guns that if something needs killing, it can be killed. Most of these guys are one man shops. Either Isaac or John told me typical man hours on a custom was 40 hrs. Most of these guys get mountains of guns sent to them weekly. They also have familial commitments that they have to attend to like everybody else. My first gun from John was perfect. Did it take a long time to build? Yes. Was it free from defect when i picked it up from John's shop? Also yes. I have read way too many posts here and on other forums about fast gunsmiths guns having to be sent back multiple times to sort problems out that should have never left the shop. Best thing to do is send your gun, tell the gunsmith, jyst call me when it is done and forget about it. If you lack patience, maybe a freedom arms revolver is a better choice.

well...... perhaps I have an alternate opinion about waiting 7 years.
So, I was about to third that waiting for 7 years is too long. Then I realized the truth.
See, I'm patient, and I don't mind if what I want is not EXACTLY my way when it's "hard" to get, seeing as every custom I see here is awesome yet not what I would always think about to order.
So! Being impatient and enjoying many varied works of others, I wait until someone is selling a custom, then I evaluate it. Is it chambered in the cartridge I want? is the barrel close to the right length? can I live with stainless? Is X or Y an OK basepin? Can I change the front sight to a Fermin?
Then the right deal comes along, and my "7 year wait" for a custom is actually just 1 month to deal with payment and transit! I win, and instant gratification!!
Then I realize the truth.... I waited 7 years for that deal to come along, maybe I should have just put in the order.....

Can only have one bisley 500 linebaugh built. Bowen and Rowen Rowen is 5 years out on grips right now, but I totally agree. I have a Bowen right now that needs Rowen grips! I’m on the list and happy to wait.

Jack or Bowen. I wouldn't wait for either Linebaugh to build a gun.

My John Linebaugh should be back this fall... And I got an email today from Bowen that the heavy lifting is done on the 32 S6 I dropped off in August... Will be heading to Scott Kolar for his first set of cross cut mammoth tusk on a single action revolver...
I'm patient and don't mind waiting within reason... If someone wants to wait almost a decade for a custom, I have nothing but admiration for their patience...I think 3 to 4 years is my limit.

I agree with Jamey if someone is patient and wants to wait I could understand...
I have waited once three years and once four and was pretty antsy by the end. Now at 62, I might have to worry if I ordered a heavy hitter with a seven or so year wait could I shoot it when it arrived at 70 years of age?

Now at 62, I might have to worry if I ordered a heavy hitter with a seven or so year wait could I shoot it when it arrived at 70 years of age? At 52, cervical fusion (and probably another or so down the line) has caused me to rethink my shooting in general...spent the day Thursday with a colleague at my sporting clays club and re-discovered my Fox 20 gauge SxS...shot just as well as I did with my Fox 12, no neck pain and had a helluva time. Once the 44/45s comes back from Harton/Huntington/Linebaugh, I'm going to focus on 38s and 32s.

I’m officially an Ol Phart now……70
These are my thoughts…….ymmv
There is one criteria to any build. One man. With one exception…….different story.
My 1911 build is from a one man shop. It was 4-7 years. I knew that going in.
If you buy a Reeder…….who built it.
Even with Bowen. He has folks work with him. But I couldn’t tell the difference. Still.
Now I guess my 12 bore Britte sidelock is different……metal work, stock work, polishing, engraving ……
Stocks and CCH are exceptions I would say for a revolver. Maybe blueing.
My thoughts……..unless I’m doing some of the work. The smith does what I can’t. And what I do meets or exceeds what the smith can do…….im an Ol Phart
Long wait is a tough call. Must be agreed upon as much as possible beforehand

I waited 2 & 1/2 years on a special order Shiloh Sharps....needless to say, it was well worth it.
