It is not really the gun, but what you put in it. Loading accurate ammo is an art form with a whole lot of science behind it. What you do versus what you should do are two different things entirely. Should you want to know, then call me.

I'm brand new to the 40-70 world, thx to Ruger breathing life back into Marlin! Broke a family rule about no new cartridges and no new calibers, a Midway order erased those sins. The Marlin Trapper really nice!

Have always liked the 22” Ruger #1 4570, loaded to potential it kicks like a mule but still a nice rifle, and I’ve never heard of any of inconsistencies in accuracy with that particular model.

I had a Ruger No1 in 45-70! It shot one inch wide groups that were 12 inches tall!! I know that there are some that shoot nice tidy groups but I’ve yet to find one. Mine is a tack driver. Consistently under an inch. With some loads .5". Reflex 264 whats the powder of choice on this load?

I had a Ruger No1 in 45-70! It shot one inch wide groups that were 12 inches tall!! I know that there are some that shoot nice tidy groups but I’ve yet to find one.[/quote] Same here with a recent SS/Walnut .45-70 No.1. Crazy vertical, but only with IMR4198. I bedded the fore-end stress free, gave it a whisker of clearance at the rear, and JB Welded the quarter rib and it settled down considerably. Still strings a little with 4198 but will cloverleaf with 4064 and 3031. I’m guessing the quarter rib just doesn’t jive with 4198’s pressure curve???[/quote] ***** This is why I like to simultaneously chronograph and target. During load development with T/C's then new .45-70 barrel for the Contender, I taped a 26 lb bar of linotype to the barrel, set it on the sandbags, then draped a 25 lb bag of birdshot over the scope. Target @ 50 yards. Loads with IMR 4198 produced vertical stringing. In a series of five shots, the fastest hit lowest. The slowest shot hit highest. Shots between 6 and 12 o’clock. Vertical of each shot corresponding to its velocity. That 5-shot group strung at least 6-inches, as I recall, at 50 yds. Without 50 lbs of inertia on the pistol, stringing would have been worse. The light, 300 grain Sierra, in conjunction with slow-for-application IMR 4198, produced 150 fps Extreme Spread. The longer the BARREL TIME, the higher the POI (Point of Impact). David Bradshaw

Lee 457-405- powdercoated .459-.460 (unsized) 48.3/H335 CCI 200 COL 2.485” 1/4 turn roll crimp Hornady 2.035” case- once fired est Velocity ~1,600 fps 5x5 just under 1.3” at 100 yards (it might have actually been 6 but I got distracted ☺️) The short Hornady case works very well with the short throated Ruger, allowing crimping in the crimp groove The problem now is the damn scope doesn’t have enough elevation!

Hadnt shot my Number 1 in awhile, stretched out to 200 yards to see how close the ballistics programs were (JBM was spot on). My groups weren’t great but I discovered our 200 yard range had a steel target which was just a ton of fun Lee 412 grain cast powdercoated slug 48.3/h335 cci200 hornady 2.035” case (leverevolution) upload image free

Ain’t it grand when you can plug in good solid data and it tells you what your drop is you dial it or hold and “ding” it’s a hit. I did that with a FA I got from 45man after firing only 5 or 6 shots and chronoing, 2 hits at 100+ followed by a pig kill at 135.

Had to adjust windage on the open sights, pulled off a couple groups like this at 100 yards. The Leupold 2-7x is shimmed on the rear mount for 400 grain load, currently on the bench. 300gr Hornady JHP 55/A2015 Winchester 8 1/2-120 primer 1/4 turn Lee FCD bbcode image
