I've had a couple of Marlin 1895s through the years, and still have the 22" barreled 1895SS model as one of my two main hunting rifles along with my Winchester Model 70 in 308.
I love Marlin leverguns, always have, and I grew up on them. Killed my first deer with my Dad's Westernfield 740A-EMN, the Montgomery Wards version of the 336 in .30-30. I've had a couple 336s, 1895s, one 1894 in 45 Colt., and my 39A.
But an 1895 in .45-70 has been one of my favorite hunting rifles for a long time. My current one I've had for about 4 years. I've killed two pretty decent bucks with it the past couple of years. Neither one ran more than about 10 yards after getting shot, but it wasn't much of a run after getting hit with that big bullet, more like a stagger before falling over dead.
Although up to this point I've only reloaded pistol and revolver ammo, I am definitely going to start reloading for the .45-70 too. I have the dies already, and 250 brand new Starline cases to work with. I'm looking at bullet and powder choices now. And of course, waiting for primers to become available again. The .45-70 has become one of my favorite rifle rounds.

Little late to the party, but here are a couple pics of my old Ruger No.1-S, in 45-70. Tried several different powders (including everyone's favorite 4198), but at day's end, got best results with 3031. Cast or jacketed / 300 - 405 grain.

After some discussion with My buddy RobL we have decided that he should keep his old school Marlin 45-70 because there’s no telling what it will be worth in the future. I’m holding out for one of the new production units.
So, do I need the Trapper or the full length rifle?

I’d say no more than 20”, so if you find a Cowboy, shorten it to 20 and keep the mag tube full length. I can live with what I lose from an 18” barrel, velocity wise, not sure what a 16.5” loses. Although a 22” Ruger#1, wouldn’t be a bad alternative Trapr

I know that there are some that shoot nice tidy groups but I’ve yet to find one.

I wanted one from the time I saw that John Wooters article when he carried his to Africa and killed that record book leopard. At the time I was a broke farm boy. It wasn't until the 90s when I finally got one and it is a beast. Actually a Christmas present from my wife.

I'd probably lean towards the trapper - as I favor carbine length for handling. That said - if at all possible, do a hands on handling comparison of both, & take it from there.

So, if you were presented with a BH in 45 Colt that did the same thing - & shooter error was ruled out, what would your diagnosis be? I've had several No.1's (45-70, 25-06, 7x57), & have been able to get them all shooting sub-moa, with a bit of load work. And some decent low power variable glass. Biggest "common" problem with the No.1, is the fitting technique (or lack there of) used for the front hand guard. Ruger knows how to do it correctly (one of their senior techs explained it to me once), but for some reason, they don't always get it right. Really like to have another 7x57, or some flavor of 6.5. No.1-A / 7x57 Sorry for the thread drift...

My .416 Rigby #1 and my .458 Win #1 are both sub moa guns. The only time I know of #1s stringing is when the fore end pressure was off. I have seen people shim them to keep light positive pressure on the barrel from the fore end and cure the problem. I know it sounds backwards but it seems to work. I had a .405 #1 that I swapped with my son and it is a tack driver as well. Not the best pic but.......all of them shoot.

Same here with a recent SS/Walnut .45-70 No.1. Crazy vertical, but only with IMR4198. I bedded the fore-end stress free, gave it a whisker of clearance at the rear, and JB Welded the quarter rib and it settled down considerably. Still strings a little with 4198 but will cloverleaf with 4064 and 3031. I’m guessing the quarter rib just doesn’t jive with 4198’s pressure curve???

I LOVE 45/70's. I have a Marlin 1895 with the ballard rifling, A Marlin Cowboy model, 1886 with 26" oct barrel and crescent butt stock, 1886 with 22" round barrel and shotgun style butt, Ruger #1 and a Contender pistol barrel 12" with muzzle tamer break. I killed my first big whitetail buck with the contender back in 1991. I shot him at 80 yards with a 300 grain Sierra HP and a stiff load of IMR 4168. My favorite bullet for the lever guns is the Speer 400 gr and Remington 405 gr. Both have been next to impossible to find lately.
