Congrats on the skeeter gun! I too read all the writings of his that I could find when I was growing up.

I was planning on rotating 30 of my hunting handguns but this gun threw a monkey wrench in the works. I have carried it numerous times instead of rotating. I have had a couple of close calls but deer hid behind trees and just generally avoided me when they heard that Skeeter's gun was in the woods. I have rotated a few and killed four deer so far. With two weeks left I am going to try to get a kill with it.

At least in the gun world, our world, you certainly have a piece of treasured history.
Congrats!

Wow, that's neat as heck. Have you gotten a deer with it yet?

Not yet. I have taken it hunting. Hopefully I will run into a nice buck while carrying it but truthfully does aren't safe. I need to get it out and shoot it. Its been a little while.

Another note since this came back up. Bart and I discussed this gun in depth and I did a lot of digging. The story as good as we can get it is: Skeeter described to Bill Ruger what the perfect Redhawk would be. 5 1/2" .41 Magnum. At the time he described it to Mr. Ruger, they didn't build this configuration. Bill went to visit Skeeter in Deming and presented the gun to Skeeter complete with Skeeter's special serial number. When I was trying to verify the authenticity before I bought it, Bart told me to get the serial number. As soon as I told Bart what the serial number was he said "that is daddy's gun." Bart wanted the gun. We had a gentleman's agreement that if I ever parted with it it would be to him for what I paid for it. He was good with that. Next time I travel hunt with it (probably 2025) I'll post and if I am in your neighborhood I am honored to let Skeeter fans shoot it. Several members of this forum have got to shoot it. It's like owning a piece of Superman's cape.

That's an awesome story, thank you for sharing it.
If you did happen to be around here, I would love the chance to shoot it. I could offer a plate of fine home cooking in return.
