I'd have a look at the Data David Clements put together for his .38 Special single sixes along with all of this. I know some on this post already know this and probably have the data, but it's a good route to go.

Dave sent me his data before I started my build. Consists of #5, Unique, 2400, H110/296 and #9.
Longshot, CFE Pistol, Silhouette and Power Pistol seem to be great choices that weren't available in the cartridge's heyday.
Best I can tell, any powder that works in the 10mm Auto will be a good choice in the 38-44.
There's lots to learn about this one...

I have been reading these post with great interest.i know this is a single action sight. But I'm going ahead here anyway. I have a s&w 6 inch model 686 revolver. I have tried some of the 38/44 loads in it and got some really surprising result. I use the lee 358/158 rf bullets at bhn of 8/9. The main question is. Are these loads ok to shoot out of my revolver? I have only tried a few with 12.3 gr of 2400. The accuracy at 50 yards from a rest was amazing. Like 6 in 3 1/2 inch groups. I also wondered if they would be ok in my Rossi 92. Appreciate any replies.

Well, I'll admit much of this site is about Single Actions. But, in reality, it's a gathering place for gun enthusiasts. So, WELCOME!!!
Newer 2400 is a bit faster than early powder. Plus, I'm a conservative handloader. So, I don't go above 12.0 grn with a 158 grn. Many handloaders do without issue.
The 38-44 Loads should be safe in both your guns with a good safety margin.
Like you, I've gotten far better accuracy from the various "Special" Length Cartridges.

As I have mentioned I am using my s w 686 with the 38-44 loads. My question is. As anyone used these for deer hunting. I am getting some pretty good groups with the 158 gr cast bullets using 12.7 grains of 2400. My velocity is over 1100 fps. Probably nothing over 50 yards. I also have the 358429 bullets. Thank you. Johnny
