Hello To All and thanks for your advice and help. Have a BRF in 500 JRH headed my way and was wondering what Dies all you hand loaders use and who has them in stock? Thanks 475Kid

RCBS PN: 23808
500 S&W / 500 Special
As far as who has them in stock, I'll leave that up to you.
But, these have the crimp in the right place...

I haven't tried them. I know this particular set of RCBS is made to load the 500 Special too.
Since the 500 Special Case is 1.285" long, it made sense that they would crimp the 1.4" 500 JRH Case as well.

What crimp die does everyone prefer?

What crimp die does everyone prefer? I've had zero issues with the RCBS roll crimp in all loads, never thought of a point trying to find something different.

I have the Hornady Dies and have had zero problems with them. A good heavy roll crimp is needed for heavy loads. I shoot only cast bullets in mine and cast my own. The Lee 440 is a good bullet for everything. I used to have a 400gn mold and shot many hundreds of them. I tried a custom 500gn mold, but the shank was too long and bulged the sides of the case just enough that it wouldn't chamber. I think a 480gn cast bullet would be about the max that will fit. I think Hornady has a 500gn jacketed bullet for the 500 S&@, but I don't know if it's too long. Anybody try it in the 500 JRH? Oh, and we'll need pics of your new BFR

lar4570 , what roll crimp die do you prefer and do you seat the bullet to depth and crimp in the same operation?

I use the rcbs dies and bought a separate seat/crimp die and pulled the seating stem out and use it just to crimp. Costs a lil more to go this way but makes life easier.

I find it interesting that half inch diameter dies are in short supply.

475Kid I've only used the Hornady crimp die and I don't have any problems with the bullets jumping the crimp. The Hornady dies came with a taper crimp and roll crimp die. I have no idea why they would send a taper crimp die. So it just sits in the box waiting for it's turn to never come. I only went with the Hornady dies because RCBS was sold out at the time. Most of my standard caliber dies are RCBS. Oh, and I seat and crimp in separate steps with the same die. I guess I should get another crimp die, so I won't have to keep adjusting the seating stem. Most of what I shoot now out of my JRH is the Lee 440 @ 1250fps, but I have run them up to 1400 just for fun.

Tell me why RCBS Die set # 23812 that is made for the 500 S&W / Special cartridges would not work for the 500 JRH. Several of you have recommended RCBS die set # 23808, also made for the 500S&W / Special. The only difference I see is one is steel the other carbide. Please educate me. Thanks again for your help.

They'll both work...
Steel Dies require lube...
I lube cases even when using Carbide Dies...
