The last three days I was in the Ocala National forest with my oldest son at a place called Buck lake. It's just flat Florida scrub. Scrub being a dense mixture of palmettos, sand pines four to forty feet, cabbage palms, twisted little scrub oaks, tall grasses, and annoying vines. I've been going on or about this weekend every year for over thirty years with a group of fellas. The last few weeks I realized my time with those "boys" is over and it's shifted to just me and my son. I've had crazy memories with a lot of them but they still do what we did twenty five years ago and I don't. If any of you have ever quit drinking and cussing and want to talk about Jesus, you know it'll change your friend group QUICK. This was Lucas' fourth year, and some of them started coming at me sideways because I brought my son. Rant over. Buck Lake is about a fifty acre lake very near the Pinecastle bombing range which was fortunately "cooking" this weekend. There's a looong trail around the lake which we walked and THEN looked up that it was 6.4 miles, in rubber boots. It was a good thing, took a few phone pictures out there.
This was last year, a little windy
Bear proof trash cans, they work
Fresh water
I don't hate anything, but if I did it would be these
A half a mile on the other side of this gate, F15's and A10's are common. We were lucky, it was the A10's Wednesday. Here's one of two pair that flew over the lake, ten seconds apart. They come in the rectangular shaped zone from the North, go low, drop an ordnance, fire the rotary cannon then pull up. The sound of the wind in the trees being broken up by tax dollars coming out of that rotary cannon is absolutely awesome.
Going around the lake, this picture sums up what we were in. There's deer, bear, hogs, panthers, foxes, coyotes, indigo snakes (rare to see), and somewhat rare Florida scrub Jays.
Two days of backstrap, bacon, and eggs for breakfast.
