As Trapr said, the one and only gun I custom ordered to my exact likings has been sent down the road. It is a phenomenal gun, love the platform and all, but just wasn’t ’doing it’ from for me. So I sold it to a much better man than me and one who has a long history and affection towards the .45 colt. I used the funds to buy a model 83 in 41 magnum. And I still have my 97 in 41 mag which is my all time favorite gun. Okay, fair enough. If it doesn’t do it for you it’s better to sell or trade it for something that will. I spent a lot of time last night thinking about which ones I can sell to get my hands on one that I’m interested in now… So lemme ask you this: have you killed any elk or anything else with your Model 97 .41 Mag yet? How’d it do if so? No elk, but a plethora of deer, hogs, and turkey with it. For those three it's about as perfect a platform and caliber as it gets in my opinion. Plenty of pics if you want to see something specific. My only regret with it, is having the front sight deleted making it a permanent optic gun. It wears a reflex style red dot sight. Send me your cell if you want any pics of it or game taken with it. Or I guess I could post it here too.

The logic of buying a compact frame gun then choosing a cumbersome long barrel length is lost on me. To me, a compact frame needs a shorter "packing pistol" barrel. Probably 5-1/2" if I planned to use it to hunt with.
That said, I do have a 9-1/2" Single Six 32H&R that's a great varmint gun, but it's actually still a large frame for the little round.
Most of my dedicated hunting revolvers are full or even large frame guns. Redhawk 44,475 and 500L, bfr 475 and 500L, Blackhawk 357max. Still all 5-1/2" except the 475 Redhawk and the Maxi are at 7-1/2" and not easy to pack.
What am I missing on this logic?

Hey Big Bore, that’s a good track record for the .41 97. Sucks about the sight deletion but I guess you could get another barrel if you really wanted, though it sounds like you got a good thing going with the reflex red dot.

I’m thinking of sending it off to have it rebarreled to a 6” with front sight. Would make for a great ranch-walking gun. I may even spring for an octagonal barrel.

I’m sure you’d love that. I know I love hiking around with my 5.5” .45 97, though it hasn’t seen nearly as much service as your .41. Now, if you can only find someone to make a hood holster for it you’ll be in business…

At the tender/stupid age of 21, outside Craig,Colorado,(elk, springs) I was hunting with my grandfather. He had impressed on me that killing an elk where the truck would not go was a problem. Me having never killed an elk was off by myself, after a rather long walk across the side of a mountain I sat down in the bottom of a steep deep ravine.I was having a Mars bar and some water when I heard steps out in front of where I was sitting. I looked hard and I observed a large Elk about 15 yards away. Shot him 3 times behind the shoulder with an old model 7.5 inch 45 colt.He dropped on the spot(8 point)(454423- 20 grains 2400) guess who spent the next 2 days packing that elk out on my back. All 3 of those bullets exited and I recovered 1 with an ax 4 inches deep in a poplar behind where he was standing.( still have it ) Got to correct my self the tree I cut that bullet was an aspen tree.

Wouldn’t have happened if you stayed close to the truck. Good on you
