I know someone who makes a 300 grainer just for the Model 97. I have a box of them they're a wide meplat style SWC/Keith gas check. Just weighed one on the Dillon at 298.5. Also, you can use .45 Schofield brass if need be for other bigger bullets with longer CTG. May need to trim the rim down on the lathe can't remember now. Someone I know used the Scofield brass but I just used the 300 with regular brass. Good bullets, but even if they don't suit you, the Scofield brass is an easy fix, or you can always trim .45 Colt brass and ream a tad inside the neck if need be. Where there's a will there's a way.

I ended up buying a ‘never fired’ NM Blackhawk with 7.5” barrel. I’ll probably always be on the prowl for another FA97 though. As Kim said, the Blackhawk won’t scratch the itch for another FA. But I’m excited about this one too - should be here later this week. I’ve already ordered 200 bullets from sixshot to try out with it. My goal for this project is a lighter weight 100 yard elk gun. Love my BFR in 454 but it gets cumbersome hiking 10+ miles a day in the mountains. I’m thinking an aluminum frame from Ronnie to fit my small hands and I should be a minimum of a pound lighter than my BFR. That’s significant when the gun alone is a pound lighter than what you are use to. Also, the lighter weight will make off hand shots much easier.
Appreciate everyone’s help and responses.

I still find myself liking the aluminum frames for certain applications. I put one on a new model vaquero and it lightened it up quite a bit for hip holstering. I have one that has custom grips and fits a 500 Linebaugh for when I want the lighter weight. Glad that RW offers them in aluminum!

Big Bore,, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Ruger. And as noted,, you can keep on hunting for a FA 97. I'm sure you know to check the throats & slug the bore if using cast. I have a set of pin gauges,, as well as a set of ball gauges to double check my guns with. And more than one .45 cal Ruger has needed a cylinder "cleaned up" to uniform specs. I have enough of them to where I bought the tools to ream myself. Another thought, since you are talking about weight & packing,, maybe a shortened barrel,, back to 6-1/2" might give you that little extra good feeling too. Not a hard or expensive modification. I have several hunting revolvers that wear a 7-1/2" barrel,, and have carried them in my Barranti NW Hunter rig a lot. Here in our WNC mountains,, chasing bears,, or maybe I should say chasing after the dogs,, I know it can be a "thing" where weight & packing is concerned. Can't tell you the number of times I've been on my hands & knees in a laurel thicket trying to get somewhere the dogs or bear might be. But I've always found my NW Hunter up to the task,, so my guns haven't been chopped any.
You do have many options,, and the time between now & next elk season to make things like you want them.

Hope you get one with the Ruger! I really like the Model 97, but the grip frame doesn't work for me. I've tried a couple with custom grips and no dice for me so far. I've been told that the ones Bowen did the modified two piece grip frames on are near to perfect, but never got around to trying one when I had the chance.

I noticed the same thing the first time I held my 97 / 41 magnum. Felt a little awkward actually. But now that I’ve adjusted to it, I absolutely love it. Hoping I can somewhat replicate it with a grip frame from RWS.

Killed a cow elk several years ago. 48 yard shot, LBT 360 gr LFN bullet, 1150 fps. Complete pass through. Gun was a Ruger Bisley Black Hawk. I am so impressed with cast lead LBT's I wont hunt with anything else. I had a reference line painted on my front sight for 100 yards too. Shot that distance several times with average groups 2"-4". Freakishly accurate with my load.

I guess you know the only way to get a true 45 Colt M83 is to buy the 454 then add the 45 Colt cylinder.

I guess you know the only way to get a true 45 Colt M83 is to buy the 454 then add the 45 Colt cylinder. Bob Baker the president of FA said they made 20 or so model 83 guns with just the 45 colt cylinder but that most of those returned for the 454 cylinder later so they stopped offering any of the secondary cylinders as stand alone a years ago. I know Ross Seyfried had one of those unique FA guns and if I’m not mistaken it was sold to one of our forum members.
