Hope you get one with the Ruger! I really like the Model 97, but the grip frame doesn't work for me. I've tried a couple with custom grips and no dice for me so far. I've been told that the ones Bowen did the modified two piece grip frames on are near to perfect, but never got around to trying one when I had the chance. I noticed the same thing the first time I held my 97 / 41 magnum. Felt a little awkward actually. But now that I’ve adjusted to it, I absolutely love it. Hoping I can somewhat replicate it with a grip frame from RWS. ...since you have a FA 97 in .41 Magnum did you not think a 250 grain LBT WFN at 1350 fps would not punch right through an elk with any less results than a 300 grain .45? 20 grains of H110 with a Cast Performance 250 WFN-GC fits the 97 perfectly and runs 1309 fps from a 4.25" barrel... If I recall correctly, Dick's friend shot a moose with Dick's load of a 230 SAECO 411 Keith bullet with 17.0 grains of Unique. Shot in the chest, found under the skin in the ham... Just wondering...Bob

You want what you want. No need to explain further.

I read that Steve said he used his 41 Magnum Redhawk with 225 gr gas check bullet and 19.0 gr 2400. NOT 17 gr Unique.

Yes it was a 225 grain cast gas checked bullet with 19 grains of 2400. It was a Ruger RedHawk. I didn’t have my Freedom Arms 41 model 83 then. It punched through the chest, through the heart and a corner of the left lung and hit a piece if the liver. We never found the bullet. It chronographed at 1396 fps at the range. Shot was at about 61 to 65 yards. I’m confident any 250 grain in almost any handgun would do the job if the hunter can do his job with shot placement. I would warn you that one shot on the moose at 5:40 pm and we didn’t get home until 2:30 am! Good luck with whatever you choose to use and good eating. Steve

I have used a Ruger Black Hawk 5.5" and a Ruger Vaquero 4 5/8". I killed a large cow elk with the Blackhawk at 48 yds. It went less than 15 yds. 365gr LBT cast at 1100 fps. The Vaquero has killed several deer and various other animals, it is always loaded with either a 270 gr LBT OWC or 310 gr LBT WFN. I am convinced the cast style bullets are my best performers. I have also killed several whitetail deer with a Rossi 92 and similar cast loads. Considering my experiences, I doubt I will ever load a jacketed bullet again.

I have a 5.5 inch Mod. 97 45 colt that I have had for about 5 years, shot a lot of ammo through it. Would not be my first choice for elk though. Some heavier bullets will seat ok for the shorter cylinder but will restrict case volume. The big issue is the recoil with heavy loads is severe. I can shoot it all day long with 255gr cast at 1000-1100 fps but get heavier and faster and the battering begins. I really like the .41 magnum and think that might be better but if push came to shove and I did not want the 83 I would have a Ruger Bisley in 45 colt built, which I did, and that is a happy medium ground.

I might have created some confusion about which bullet Callshot used on his moose because I stated once that it was my 230 gr Keith bullet & he reminded me that he had his own mold by then & the odd thing was it didn't have a crimp groove. One of the very few bullets I've ever seen that didn't have one. Have no idea what it was for but that's the bullet he used to take his fine bull moose with, and he made a dandy one shot kill.

Big Bore, resurrecting the thread here to ask if you ever got your elk with a .45 Colt? If so, how far, what’d you use, and how’d it do? Cheers, man.

I’m riding in a truck with the new owner of that gun right now…….I don’t believe BigBore ever got his elk with it. He upgunned himself with a 454 and a 500jrh.

As Trapr said, the one and only gun I custom ordered to my exact likings has been sent down the road. It is a phenomenal gun, love the platform and all, but just wasn’t ’doing it’ for me. So I sold it to a much better man than me and one who has a long history and affection towards the .45 colt.
I used the funds to buy a model 83 in 41 magnum. And I still have my 97 in 41 mag which is my all time favorite gun.

I spent a lot of time last night thinking about which ones I can sell to get my hands on one that I’m interested in now… So lemme ask you this: have you killed any elk or anything else with your Model 97 .41 Mag yet? How’d it do if so?
