I agree. It seems "I want to control the World" and "I know best" is the problem.
There are those who'd like to vote away gun ownership period. It's all about controlling others.
If you don't want to deal with the public, don't go to a public range.
A gun owner, of any gun, is supporting our sport.

Never had a rifle with a brake on it but have had a S&W .500 with the 8 3/8” barrel with the brake on it and now my Nosler 7mm-08 pistol has a brake on it. The first time I fired the .500 I was at a members only range and the pistol range shooting area is covered with a tin roof. I told the several other shooters that the pistol had a brake on it and I had no idea how loud it was going to be. They laughed and said go ahead, it won’t bother us. The first shot was immediately followed be a “Holy Shit! What in the hell is that thing?!” I prefer a suppressor on my guns when possible but if a brake is a must it is common courtesy to inform your fellow shooters. I also warn them when I shoot my Shiloh .50-90 that the big deep boom will be followed by a large cloud of smoke and lots of giggles.😎 I have a 50-90 in progress I ordered a couple years ago. I think they are supposed to start it Feb/March ish. Looking forward to seeing it completed!

So…. Did you go for that threaded barrel option for suppressor or will they do a brake on that 50/90?

Had a nephew here over Christmas. He brought his Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster. It has a brake that looks like it came off a piece of artillery. Outside in my backyard, it was not so bad. Being outside, staying behind or off shoulder and bore size/velo contributed to slightly less than awful. Recoil, was way less than expected, the pay off for that brake.

If I had any pull at the County range I would vote to ban the damn things! Cant handle your rifles recoil, tough, go home and come back with a rifle you can handle without firing something with an obnoxious BRAKE on the end of it. Do I really, really feel that way? OH YEAH!!!!! ![>:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png) You are both missing the entire point of the brake and don’t care all at the same time. Has nothing to do with not being able to take the recoil. Not all of us shoot 22s. Any of the big guns will bounce all over without a brake. The smaller ones don’t move at all with a brake so you can spot impacts/misses. It is becoming apparent from your posts to me that you are a casual shooter, not a competitor and your calling names of the guys that show up with equipment used for competition just backs that up. Nothing wrong with that. Thankfully, here when I run across someone like that, they are intrigued and ask questions. They’ve heard of the matches we shoot and are curious. They ask great questions. I’ve let them try our rifles etc. I’ve seen maybe a dozen of them show up at future matches. That’s how you help it grow. Fortunately, for your fellow shooters, you don’t have any pull to take away their freedom of shooting what makes them happy and brought them to the sport. As I said earlier. There is always a way to drive folks away from the shooting sports. It’s much better to acknowledge that we don’t all have the exact same likes or dislikes and move on when at the range. I hear the pistol guys over in the distance shooting as fast as my full auto guns and I know they aren’t hitting anything. I shake my head and smile. If you go through life wanting to find something to be pissed at, I promise you won’t have to look far. I think you’d be happier to buy property and just make your own private range. I know I would love it if I could find some. You take things personal that werent and you take yourself too seriously.

I am not telling anybody else what to do, but I literally can not be around some of them. I will no longer shoot at a public rifle range because of the pain breaks cause me. It hurts like hell. I can not stand to be around them. I can only shoot a rifle when the weather is good enough to drive 40 miles to the forest , I would not shoot full magnum revolver loads in doors because it hurts me and others. I am not saying it is annoying , i am saying it hurts like hell, And believe me I have not been sheltered from pain. Football s back operations and probably passed 20 kidney stones, I know what pain is. I bought one of the early Marlin Guide guns with the Ports. I sold it after the 1st batch of hand loads. And the did not make them for long. ...tj

I know l am just an old fart who does not understand. But I hate the damn things on a hunting rifle. I don't even like the threaded caps on the end. On. Fighting gun I understand. Can’t say as I like em on a fighting gun either. If you’ve ever had a gunfight in a dark stairwell, you’d also agree. As for threaded barrels with thread protectors: Well, hell TJ, that’s where the suppressor goes…

Repost over on Accurate Shooter and see what responses you get. Most serious rifle guys now use a brake or a tuner/brake for all the reasons listed, at least when the rules of that specific competition allow.

I do not object to suppressors at all ! I actually plan on getting a suppressed 22 for grouse while Elk hunting...tj I got a suppressor for my .22's here at the ranch for that exact thing. Wanted to be able to take grouse and not blow the elk off the property .....works perfect . With subsonic hunting ammo it is crazy quite .

With some guns, brakes are a necessity. Back in the early 90's, my dad built his first .50 BMG bolt gun. Being young and dumb, I asked him to unscrew the brake one day at the range. Took one shot and immediately told him to screw it back on. My .585 Nyati is another 'must be braked' rifle. No way I'm launching 750 gr bullets @ 2,450 fps without one: ![](https://www.singleactions.com/images/585_Nyati_58.jpg) -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I went through a carbine class one Saturday, ten men total. Seven AR's of 223 flavor, two AK's I dunno, and me with a Springfield SOCOM with a factory brake in 308. The brake helped me put 800 rounds on target (mostly) in one day. The guys to the left and right of me six feet away, not so much.
