I think I might need a .50 caliber revolver since I don’t have one. The question is which one? I am thinking that the .500 JRH is the chambering to go with so the next question is which gun to go with? Do I have a Ruger Bisley or a Freedom Arms 83 rechambered or do I go with a Factory BFR? I plan to go with a 7 1/2” barrel and some type of optic for hunting. I hate to say it but I have never even held a BFR so I am relying on the opinions of others.

I own 45 hunting handguns. I recently purchased a BFR in 50AE. I sent it back to Magnuem Research to have a .500JRH cylinder fitted. I am very pleased with the gun and caliber.

My BFR's ( 45-70 & 500 JRH )... you get a lot of gun for the money with the BFR's... in fact, I've been eyeing a 500 Linebaugh BFR, that seems priced right... now do I really need 2 50 cals...   |

I know in general BFRs are well regarded, but I did not have the best experience with mine. I bought a factory new 500 Linebaugh BFR Bisley model with 5 1/2 barrel off of GunBroker. They had seemed to have been highly regarded so I was excited. What I received was pretty disappointing. The finish on the edges of much of the metal was still rough. The hammer still had burrs on it that needed to be filed off. My first cylinder through, my gun jammed. It ended up that the ejector rod housing still had burrs on the inside and the spring for the ejector rod caught on one for those burrs when being compressed due to the recoil. The ejector rod was just free-floating back and forth as a result, which ended up in a fired chamber and jammed up the gun. Finally, the underside of the grip frame looked as though the finishing work had not been completed before being sent out. To me it looked like it was about 80% done. It still had significant tooling marks. To its credit though, the grips were perfectly finished to the frame. Overall, I've had Rugers that cost 1/3 the price of a BFR that were better finished. I personally would not buy another one unless I got it from the Custom Shop because it looks like the guy doing the work there takes care to do it right. It doesn't seem that my experience is the norm, but I definitely wanted you to go in with eyes wide open.

Here's a Huntington converted FA83 in 500 JRH. Bought it used. Had it out yesterday shooting 400gr at a little over 1,000 fps - about as much fun as I can tolerate any more.  |

As for the cartridge, the .500JRH was an easy choice for me strictly due to bullet selection. The popularity of the .500S&W has really expanded the bullet selection in that diameter. The Linebaugh is the classic but commercial bullets are much less prevalent for those that do not cast. As for the sixgun, the BFR is a very well made sixgun and really a bargain for what is received. That said, there are things I don't like about them that are insurmountable. First and foremost is their grip frame. It is basically a reshaped Super Blackhawk grip with even more room behind the triggerguard and that is awkward for me. I've handled them and shot them and I don't like it. Plus it looks like a banana. Secondly, I'm over stainless steel. If the BFR was easily converted to a Ruger Bisley, I would have one just to have a .500Linebaugh. Getting picky, I don't like the ejector housing, the front sight or the general shape of the frame. To me it looks strictly like a product of engineering, with no artistic flair whatsoever. So my .500JRH is a blued custom Ruger Bisley, with ivory.  |
