I have a model 81 purchased recently that will be out of jail in about 2 weeks that I look forward to playing with. Had one years ago in .300 Savage, but the round never interested me. The one I just got is in .30 Remington, basically the rimless version of the .30-30 Win. I had brass and dies left over from when I had a Remington 141 in .30 Rem some time back. Now I have a Rem 14 in .32 Rem as well as the model 81 on the way. These old Remington rifles are intriguing.

These are fun rifles, I have a Model 8 in 35 Remington and had an 81 in 300 Savage. They are scarce, but receiver sights are out there to be had. The shuffling recoil is a bit odd at first to folks that arent used to shooting A-5s. I prefer the straight stock of the Model 8 which is why I sold the 81. Both of my rifles had about 80 years worth of dried up grease and oil in them when acquired which made them function a bit sluggishly, a thorough cleaning and both have run great ever since.
It seems like 30 years ago you still saw a lot of these rifles in use, much less so now. The 14,14 1/2, and 141s are all cool designs too. A Model 14 in 25 Remington is on my short list.

141's IN 30 REMINGTON AND 35 REMINGTON, AND 81's IN 30 REM, 35 REM AND 300 SAVAGE LIVE IN MY HOUSE, NEAT AND USEFUL GUNS. THE 30 REM MODEL 81 IS A TEXAS RANGER RIFLE THAT I SHOULD PROBABLY LET GO TO A RANGER COLLECTOR. SOME OF THESE HAVE BEEN USED AS LOANERS AND HAVE BEEN BLOODIED BY SOME OF MY SONS.
WITH THE ATTACHMENT OPTIONS, AND OPTICS, AVAILABLE TODAY IT MAY BE FAIRLY EASY TO SET UP AN 81 WITH SCOUT FORWARD MOUNTED OPTICS (SCOPE OR RED DOT).

Yep.....an 81 in 300SAV built in 1950. I was warned not to tinker with it or take it apart cause it has more parts and springs than a car!

I went back and forth on whether an 8 or an 81. Started looking at an 81 as they are not quite as ancient as many 8's out there at over a century old. Checked sites a week or so ago and GI had one of each. Called first on the 8, already gone, just listed! Called on the 81, in TX at Cabelas. Talked to a fella there, took him a while to find it, thought it was sold. But he found it, had him look it over for me, sounded OK so bought it and now waiting for the "assault rifle" 10 day waiting period we have in WA state now. Idiotic BS!

If you can detail strip a model 92 or 94 Winchester you can do a Model 8/81, just dont let any of the springs get away from you as they can achieve low earth orbit or shatter a fluorescent light bulb (not that I know anything about that!). Great rifles.... they also take down into two pieces easily. Remove the fore end and us that lever on the bottom to unscrew the barrel assembly from the action once the bolt is unlocked.

I had this model 8 in 35 Remington awhile back. It came out of the El Paso board patrol. I bought it in 1992 at a San Antonio gun show for $150. The internal parts were all worn out.....it took quite a bit of work to get it back operational again. Tony

I love the looks of these rifles. I have been tempted many times to buy one. But so far have resisted.

My .32 Rem is overdue to get back in the woods. But like most of my hunting guns, once I get something with them, I usually stop using them, give something else a chance.

I had one in 25 Remington for several years. It went out a few times for caribou but the critters never cooperated to give me a shot when I had it in hand. Cool old rifles. There's a forum called Vintage Semi Auto Rifles. A lot of great history on the Remington and Winchester semi autos. Some great pictures by one of the posters of his homesteading ancestors and the Remington 8.

On both those forums, not much activity on either but lots of info. On the hunt for a .25 myself.

Mark Novak recently did two videos on them. The full length video linked below is an hour long, but 75% of it is refinishing the stock. Full version. youtu.be/SraClK1Bo0s

Found this thread while looking for a 14/141, 8 or 81 for sale. Doesn't look like it will ever happen for me ($$) so I'll reluctantly trade/sell off my stash of .30 Rem stuff. I really think they are a piece of firearms history that should stick around though. I've got 140 pieces of new/never fired brass. 86 pieces of previously fired brass. A set of .30 Rem RCBS dies. Couldn't seem to find a "for sale" option on the site, but thought I'd throw it out there because I know how hard it can be to find now and figure I may a well if I'm not going to use it. If interested, texts are best (208) 691-1504.
