BASED UPON WHAT I HAVE READ HERE ON SINGLEACTIONS, AND AFTER RE-READING THE SECTION ON THE BEE IN BOWEN's FINE BOOK, THE 218 BEE WORKS, AND WORKS WELL, IN A REVOLVER. BY WELL I MEAN FUNCTIONS WELL (NO SET BACK ISSUES), IS ACCURATE AND YOU CAN GET TO OVER 1,900fps (WITH 46gr BULLETS). I AM EVEN THINKING THAT S&W SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH THE BEE AND NOT THE JET, AND, EXCEPT FOR A FEW GUNS FROM TAURUS, WONDER WHY IT HAS NOT BEEN A FACTORY REVOLVER CHAMBERING.
I HAVE A 10.5 INCH BFR IN 22 HORNET THAT MAGNUM RESEARCH CAN FIT A BEE CYLINDER TO FOR APPROX $350, PLUS ABOUT $80 SHIPPING ROUNDTRIP, AND I MAY DO THIS BUT I AM NOT SURE I NEED, WANT OR HAVE A USE FOR A 22 CF REVOLVER THE SIZE OF A 10.5 INCH SUPER BLACKHAWK, WITH LITTLE HOLES IN THE CYLINDER AND BARREL.
YEARS AGO, MAYBE 40 OR MORE, I BOUGHT A 6 INCH S&W MODEL 17 THAT HAD BEEN "CONVERTED" TO 224 K-CHUK BUT I COULD NOT GET THAT SOB TO FIRE, THEN I FIGURED OUT THAT RF FIRING PIN HAD NOT BEEN CONVERTED TO CF. I SENT THE REVOLVER TO ROBER SNAPP, UP MICHIGAN WAY IIRC, WITH A MODEL 53 JET HAMMER, AND HE CONVERTED THE REVOLVER TO A DUAL FIRING PIN. NICE REVOLVER, FITTED WITH THE K-CHUK CYLINDER AND A 22lr CYLINDER, THAT I HAVE NOT PLAYED WITH IN MAYBE 40 YEARS. I FOUND AN XTRA MODEL 17 CYLINDER IN MY PARTS "INVENTORY" AND WAS THINKING OF CONVERTING THE 22lr CYLINDER TO BEE BUT THE MODEL 17 CYLINDERS ARE TOO SHORT.
THE LONGER CYLINDERS OF THE S&W 22 JET REVOLVERS WILL ACCOMODATE THE BEE. BACK IN THE 1970's I WAS A S&W 22 JET ACCUMULATING DERVISH, AND ACQUIRED 5, AND HAD THEM ALL FACTORY FITTED WITH TARGET HAMMERS AND TRIGGERS AND AUXILLARY 22lr CYLINDERS. ON ONE NICKELED 6 INCHER I EVEN HAD 2 22lr CYLINDERS FITTED, 1 OF WHICH I RECHAMBERED TO 22 K-HORNET, AND I WAS THINKING OF SACRIFICING THE REMAINING 22lr CYLINDER TO THE BEE BUT THE JET BARRELS ARE FOR .222 BULLETS AND THE BEE USES .223/.224 BULLETS.
I HAVE BEEN "EYEING" THE FA MODEL 97 IN 224-32. PERFORMANCE WISE THE 224-32 MAY BE THE BEST 22 CF REVOLVER CHAMBERING. WAS EVEN THINKING THAT MAYBE A CUSTOM BEE CYLINDER COULD BE FITTED TO A MODEL 97 IN 224-32 BUT IF A BEE WILL FIT IN A MODEL 97 IT WOULD BARELY FIT, AND ONLY WITH ROUND OR FLAT NOSED BULLETS, AND NOT WITH LONGER SPIRE POINTS (MAYBE THAT IS WHY FA WENT WITH THE 224-32 SO THAT SPIRE POINT BULLETS COULD BE USED???). PLUS MODEL 97 224-32's ARE EXPENSIVE $2,000 PLUS GUNS TO GET INTO.
BACK IN THE 1970's I RECHAMBERED AN XTRA JET AUXILLARY CYLINDER TO 22 HORNET FOR USE WITH, IIRC, AN 8 3/8ths INCH MODEL 53. MOST FACTORY 22 HORNET AMMO IS LOADED TOO LONG FOR A JET LENGTH CYLINDER BUT WORKS FINE WITH APPROPRIATE STYLE BULLETS IN HANDLOADS. IIRC, I SHOT A NICE 9 POINT BUCK AND A COUPLE OF FERAL HOGS WITH THE HORNET CYLINDERED MODEL 53. THEN I GOT A 22 K-HORNET REAMER BUT DID A POOR (SLOPPY) RECHAMBER JOB. MY NEXT TRY WITH THE 22 K-HORNET REAMER (ON THE NICKELED 22lr CYLINDER MENTIONED ABOVE) TURNED OUT GREAT. I NEED TO DO SOME CHECKING, BUT I DO NOT THINK THAT "SLOPPY" 22 K-HORNET WILL CLEAN UP PROPERLY TO A BEE (IF ANY OF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW).
BACK AGAIN IN THE 70's, MAYBE EARLY 80's, I HAD A S&W MODEL 14 K-38 AND HAD THE CRANE MODIFIED TO TAKE THE LONGER JET CYLINDERS, REPLACED THE K-38 BARREL WITH AN 8 3/8ths K-22 BARREL, AND FITTED A 22 SUPER JET CYLINDER (AN IMPROVED JET/22 CALIBER 256). THE K-22 BARREL STUCK INTO THE FRAME A LITTLE TOO FAR AND HAD TO BE SHORTENED (NOT A BAD THING AS IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SET MINIMAL BARREL/CYLINDER GAP). IT HAS BEEN WAY TOO MANY YEARS SINCE I PLAYED WITH THIS 22 SUPER JET REVOLVER, BUT I HAVE ACQUIRED FORMED BRASS AND A LEE F/C COLLET DIE, AND IT MAY BE TIME TO PAY IT SOME ATTENTION.
GOING THRU MY CYLINDERS INVENTORY I FOUND AN XTRA, UNFITTED, 22 JET AUXILLARY CYLINDER IN 22lr, AND I KNOW I ALSO HAVE A 6 INCH K-22 MAG (MODEL 48) IN MY PARTS BIN, SO THIS IS WHAT I AM THINKING: TAKING THE MODEL 14 SUPER JET REVOLVER, HAVING THE XTRA 22lr CYLINDER RECHAMBERED TO THE 218 BEE, AND HAVE THE CYLINDER AND THE MODEL 48 BARREL FITTED TO IT, AND KEEPING THE SUPER JET CYLINDER FITTED TO THE SAME REVOLVER (TO LOAD THE SUPER JET WITH BEE BULLETS) AND HAVE A DUAL CYLINDERED 218 BEE/22 SUPER JET REVOLVER. THIS SHOULD COST A LOT LESS THAN MOST ANY OTHER 218 BEE CONVERSION, AND WOULD GIVE ME AN IDEAL FIELD REVOLVER FOR HOLSTER CARRY.
CAVEAT: NOT SURE I HAVE ANY PRACTICAL NEED FOR A 22 CF THAT CANNOT BE FILLED BY A 327 REVOLVER, BUT THESE LITTLE 22 CF'ers CAN GET ADDICTIVE.
