That looks nice...I was actually thinking the bull hide like I used on my Snubbie holster might make interesting grips... I have to wonder what part of the "bull" that came from. Awfully wrinkly.

Skeeter Skelton wrote of his border patrol days on horseback at Amado AZ on the border. One of the older officers who knew Doug Wesson wore tennis shoes and had a holster made of really thick leather and the grips on his 5" .357 Magnum were also made of thick slabs of leather glued up and rounded off to his liking. This old patrolman said when he saw skeeter's S. D. Meyers cross draw holster "Hey Pete where did you get that chicken skin"
This is from Hipshots August 1987. Go to the Dark Canyon site and search for it under Skeeter Skelton. Took me a while to find it........

early in my days of putzing with making holsters I made this compact flap holster out of beaver tail... I always liked leather with texture, used quite a bit of ostrich leg leather... had 4-5 beaver tails... & that infamous bull shoulder

Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do with it...
one thing, kind of as expected... the leather is thicker at the base, & gets gradually thinner towards the end... maybe an 1/8" difference in thickness between the 2 ends... so I always tried to use out of the middle

Of course everyone has their own opinion but to me it kind of looks like the top of an old card table. Everyone can get their kicks saying look at this. I have leather grips on my gun. But for me it's like "who cares"? Sorry, but for me being a grip maker, I've seen so many beautiful grips that something has to look really really good to get me jazzed up. They're fine if you like that sort of thing.

To me it's kind of what I always say. You may find a beautiful piece of wood that would make a beautiful jewel box top but, if you cut a small piece out of it to make a gun grip, it just doesn't look that good anymore. I guess it's in the eye. A small piece doesn't grab your eye like a big piece does. I would say that also pertains to leather.

I found a really nice curly oak 1x6 at Lowe's. It will have to go on a good sized knife handle or something longer to get the effect, due to the size of the curls. If it were made into a set of grips, it would only have two or three curls and it just wouldn't be the same.
