I have a box of the 220gr soft point half jackets I found at a gun show a few years ago. 4417 is the product code.
Not sure what I’ll ever do with them but it seems fitting I find a midrange load for my model 58

I shot one deer with that bullet, a doe in 2007 and it went through-through without hitting any solid bone. This through a 6.5" S&W, 17.8gr of AA9 which averaged 1355fps. Through a 10" T/C barrel it went 1522fps but I only shot paper with that combination. Same load was pretty average for accuracy in a 7.5" Blackhawk but shot very well through a 7.5" FA M97 at 1426fps.
I've loaded 2400 and Lil'Gun with this bullet as well as others, seems nothing works with every bullet through every barrel but as I imagine most people find in searches like that you should be able to find some combination that works in a given gun. Still have some solids and HPs of the old Speer type, am next looking to use a Nosler JHP on a deer but would use the Speers again. Have killed deer with the Speer 200hp and Sierra 170hp through handguns and 210XTP, Remington 200hp and 210gr Gold Dot through a Marlin. Have never hit a large bone to know how any of them might have worked against that.

You "should" be able to, but I dont know jack about the 41 special. In a 41 mag, I would look for at least 1100 fps.

No, No. I didn't mean that. I have never had a jacket stick myself. Not once. I have heard it too many times to say it cant happen, but it has never happened to me. That is after thousands of these bullets. Your load should be ok, but since I dont know about the 41 special, I dont want to give you false hope.

Mr. Taffin lists both of those Half jacketed Speer bullets in his .41spl data from long ago. I think it is one of his favorites. He lists them with with several powders. I have used them with 6.5gr of Unique..........

8.0 grains of Unique will give you 950 fps and should be fine...
Have been shooting these bullets in all the calibers since the 1970s...it was a real heartbreak to see them discontinued.
In 2003 I was on a motorcycle trip out west and stopped to see friend Alan Jones who was the editor of the Speer Reloading Manual up till #13. Alan showed me the machine that had been making that line of bullets since the 1960s and said it was on it last legs and when it went down that would be the end...and about three years later the line was discontinued. If you look in the #14 Manual under .41 Magnum you will see a BIG cougar taken with a Taurus Tracker and that HP bullet.
The bullet is very tough... That lead is not real soft. I shot a 200 HP through six gallons of water, one 3/4" sheet of concrete form plywood and the bullet stuck in the second piece... That was with 22.0 grain of H110 but can't remember if it was a 4" or 6" gun... The nose melted off and the little ashcan just keeps a truckin'...
Just found the last stash of about 6 boxes of the 220 grain SP...in the process of loading them up with 9.0 grains of Unique... It's a great bullet...basically a jacketed Keith bullet...cuts a nice round hole in everything...

For me, extremely accurate in 41 Mag. My load was already mentioned, 22.0 H110/WW296. I have a small quantity still loaded.
Saw a box of the 220 solids this past weekend at a gunshow for $40. Was going to buy but needed all my cash for the S&W M624 I found on another table.

Shot a lot of them & sold a lot of them back in the late 60's when I got my first 41 magnum. It was a used 4" model 57 & those were the bullets I started out with before I started casting. I was working part time at a Gibson't Discount Center when I wasn't at the base & those bullets were $2.67 a box & 100 primers were 67 cents! A lot of Armadillos & turtle got very dehydrated in a hurry when one of those slugs caught up to them. Also one big Raccoon got one for almost biting me in the face.

They are still my reserve hollow point in all calibers for anything up close. I simply love those bullets.

This was the first bullet I reloaded in 1971 for a model 57. I killed 3 deer with that load before I moved on to something I thought would be better. Wish I had an ammo can full of them now.

A friend has a lead hardness tester, I gave him some of the 220gr SP and he told me they measured nearly pure lead. Couldn't work his device on the HP's but I've always read they were also soft bullets. One example indicating otherwise is in a magazine of handgun hunting showing one of the 200 HP's having been used on a deer or antelope with a barely distorted hollow point--text says it came from a Blazer case which Speer used to load with these slugs.
