I have a late season cow elk tag & tonight with about an hour of daylight left I decided to go for a little drive to see if they had moved into a favorite spot I know of. This place is only a few minutes from town, maybe 6-7 minutes really but there are several hay fields in the area & that's what draws them in after a few snow storms. I did some glassing in the first usual spot but could see a truck driving along the fence line about a mile away so I knew that place wouldn't have any elk in it tonight so I drove down another road & there they were above me about 700-800 yds. I couldn't really tell because I had forgot my range finder. Didn't really matter, they were in really heavy brush & I doubt at that distance if my range finder could have read them. There was no way to count them but the whole hillside was elk, there had to be at least 80 head, perhaps more if there were some on the other side. I really wasn't dressed for a stalk, I was wearing tennis shoes because I had just came from a grandson's ballgame, I was really just checking to see if the elk had moved in, well, they had moved in big time. Now the guessing game begins, where will they be each day I hunt them, elk move a lot! I'll hunt them until I get one, I have until the end of December so I won't do much climbing, I'll let them come to me & hopefully sooner or later the wind will be right & I can be in the right place to get a revolver shot, we'll see. Also saw something like 80-100 deer & one of my sons has a late archery tag, several bucks with 1/2 dozen shooters.

My belt gun will be my bisley 41 maggie loaded with a 250 gr LBT over 17 grs of 2400, a proven load on elk. And my other gun that sticks out of my pack back is my 10.5" bisley 44 magnum loaded with the 255 gr Keith over 21 grs of 2400, a load that's taken 5 elk for me in the past. This gun is scoped in case I can't get close enough for the 41 maggie. It's not too cold out side today but the wind is probably going to keep me home, it's really blowing hard. The elk will stay in heavy cover & I probably won't even see them if I go.

Good luck Buddy! I went and scouted today too. It's been so dry they're not where they should be.
I saw about 300 in in group in the Caldera but my tag doesn't allow me to hunt there.
They'll stay in there until it snows good. There's water in the bottom too.
No hay fields here...
Thanks for the load info. It will be cut and pasted into my "Dick's Loads" document that's gotten up to 3 pages now. Lots of repeats but that's god too.
Be safe....

Went back out tonight, saw lots of deer even though it was really windy but no elk. They were there somewhere but elk don't stay in one place like deer. There are 2 big herds in this area but they are big, strong animals & can cover a lot of ground in a hurry if they decide to move. I don' think they moved very far, I just didn't see them. I'll hunt them pretty much every day now until I figure them out. I still need them to come to me, I don't have much Mountain Goat left in me.

...ya, have noticed that us "mountain goats" have turned into "old goats"...
But as long as we're on the eatin' side of the grass we keep going...
Get a good one Dick...
