Didn't get to go tonight, too many errands to run plus one of my sons showed up with one of his sons. They had been out on a late archery hunt that's right on the edge of town & they had spotted a nice muley buck & had just left the truck when my grandson Mason spotted a very large Badger. He wasn't carrying a bow, his dad had the archery tag so he hustled back to the truck & grabbed his old 722 Remington 222 that I gave him & popped that old Badger dead center in the pump house. He's really furred up, good claws, nasty looking teeth & heavy, he's a brute! He will have a nice mount when he gets him back. Dick

DICK, COOL. IS THE 722 THE REALLY UGLY, BUT GOOD SHOOTING REMINGTON? BADGERS ARE VERY RARE WHERE I HANG OUT IN TEXAS. SAW 1 ON A SOUTH TEXAS DEER LEASE IN THE 70's, AND A FEW WEEKS AGO SAW ONE CROSSING THE HWY NORTH OF FREER, TEXAS.

Rey, you are right, the 721 & 722 rifles were ugly but they were shooters! The 721 was the long action gun & the 722 was the short action, 222, 308, etc. My daughter took her first elk with one in 308 when she was 14. They were the fore runner to the Remington 700's. The 222's had 26" barrels & were fantastic shooting guns. We have lots & lots of Badgers here because we have so many Ground Squirrels, find the Ground Squirrels & you will find yourself a Badger!

DICK: AFTER I POSTED MY BRAIN KICKED IN AND THE REALLY UGLY BOLT GUN I WAS THINKING ABOUT WAS THE 788. MY BROTHER HAS A 721 IN 270 THAT WAS MY DAD's. MY BROTHER USES IT FOR EVERYTHING, DEER, HOGS, FEMALE NILGAI, JAVELINA, ...

I've been seeing them but they've been seeing me! Every since I came home from my heart surgery in Salt Lake both my knees have been giving me fits. This elk hunt is going to drag on for a while because I don't dare take a chance on running them down like I use to, they have to come to me. It's been trying to snow today so I'll go this afternoon & see what they are up to, I can be out there in 6-7 minutes. Just need to locate them & try to figure out where they are coming down.

Dick,
All the best to you in getting an elk. That is one of my goals to take one with my handgun.
As far as I'm concerned, they are some of the best table fare around. I got a chance to hunt in Wy years back and got one with the rifle. Man are they tasty!
Keep us informed on the story.

I was driving is 4-5" of snow tonight & lots of elk tracks but didn't see any elk. On my way out I talked to one of the ranch hands & he said last night when he was feeding the cows he counted 127 head working their way around the mountain side where I had just came from. He also has a tag but told me it was 6 degrees yesterday & he wasn't finished feeding. We still have 2 weeks left, they will come down earlier in the day, sooner or later. This stuff they are staying in is thick! Dick

...keep at it Dick and one will walk into you... I had that happen to me once... during deer season, hehehe. Of course, we let him walk away. I couldn't find him when I went back for elk season.

I sure would like to have more than 5 days to hunt. It makes it really hard.

Hang in there Dick. Even that much snow is hard to walk in. Slow and steady will get it done.
