Not a number one guy so, does it have an extractor or ejector. Ejector and a rimmed case would be my choice for hunting.

Roger Renner does a very handy No.1 in the .500 bullet diameter Emailed him the other day about them. Well... about something else, but while I was a couldn't help but ask, that's the setup in 500L I've wanted a long time. Now the issue is a rifle to build on. I have one that, well, I just don't know. You know what heartbreakers No.1's can be and this one is. Thursday it shot 3-4" 100 yard groups. Saturday it shot 1/2 & 3/4" 100 yard groups. Sunday it shot 2" 100 yard groups... and the same load shot 200 yard 2" groups also??? Thursday I was sending it to him. lol Saturday I was never parting with it. By sunday I was unsure again.

CAS, your erratic groups with a #1 could be a number of things, but one simple variable made a lot of difference in my group sizes with a 7x57 #1 International. If I rested the forearm on a sandbag from the hanger screw forward, groups would open up. If I rested it on the forearm back towards the receiver, groups would shrink and be consistent. Just a thought.

It's a No.1V I'm shooting it slow, with the barrel at a consistent temperature for each shot using an digital thermometer. I'm using a consistent rest, forend is bedded down below, relieved at the receiver and the barrel channel free floated. I have some ideas for a different style foremd setup I'd like to play with, but I don't want to mess with it at the moment. I want to hunt with it in a few weeks, and at the moment I think it's doing good enough for where/what I want to do with it. And that's where I'm torn. I want to experiment with my idea on one level. On another, I will never find a donor rifle for a conversion for as little as what I have in this rifle. (and I can replace it, it's current "job" with many other things that would do better with no muss, no fuss)

It's a No.1V... I will never find a donor rifle for a conversion for as little as what I have in this rifle... It sounds like a temperamental brat. It needs to be a big bore. Just send it to Roger. He's a No.1 wizard and the one I handled is a honey. Do it.
