This one made me chuckle a bit. Redhawks will handle more power than I'm interested in shooting out of them. I decided to cap my Redhawk loads at 350gr and 1,200 fps to keep them enjoyable. Out of a 4" barrel you've got a lot more headroom before the pressure ceiling is reached. It is the only big bore that's ever literally ripped the skin off of my hand. Here's some video from that range trip below. I will say that I foolishly assumed my hand was hitting the hammer spur at the time. Mr. Bradshaw wisely pointed out that it was the backstrap giving me trouble. Reshaping that is on my lengthy to do list for winter. Reshaping the backstrap, can you and/or Mr. Bradshaw elaborate. Keep in mind, I'm a retired Marine so photo's are helpful or maybe even pictures in crayon. ๐

Keep in mind, I'm a retired Marine so photo's are helpful or maybe even pictures in crayon. ๐ ***** rhino.... to my hand the Redhawk has never had a grip appropriate for short barrels. I shot the factory grip 7-1/2โ .44 Mag Redhawk without complaint. Still remember my first 6-shots with mag ammo in the 5-1/2โ Redhawk, bashing the base of my thumb with Federal #44B 180 JHP @ 1,620 fps. I think by the time Ruger introduced the 5-1/2โ in 1982, Pachmayr was making a big fat version of its presentation for the Redhawk. After whittling neoprene to narrow the toe, the Pachmayr Presentation became my standard carry grip. Bill Ruger had hoped Pachmayr and others would not make a grip for his Redhawk. Persons shooting at the time may recall $300 Redhawks selling for $700 and up, just as the M-29 brought scalper money. Ruger introduced the Super Redhawk to improve single action setoff with independent trigger spring, to eliminate the Redahawkโs drop forged, broach rifled barrel, to ease scope mounting without disturbing iron sights, and to take advantage of the GRIP SPIKE idea practiced by Warren Center and Dan Wesson. Ruger even figured his own grip on a grip spike would chase away outside grip makers. While Bill missed on this one, realize his progressive rheumatoid arthritis had shrunk his hands and he barely ever shot a gun anymore. He still handled his guns. Summer of 1981 Bill drove his Waggoneer up the hill in his backyard to check on Bill, Jr., and this shooter, shooting SRM prototype .357 Maximums. I invited Bill to try his hand. Rest ing SRM-2 on sandbags, he stitched six shots into 6-inches @ 100 yards. Brought a big smile to his face. After making sure weโd be on time for cocktails before dinner, he drove back to his renovated barn house to take his 1929 Bentley tourer for a torquing. Bill, Jr., said that was the first time heโd seen his father shoot in four years. The factory Super Redhawk grip panels and my hand could not come to agreement. Heavy loads bashed my middle finger worse than full stokers in Ruger Dragoon. In fact, I love the Super Blackhawk Dragoon grip, both looks and function. However, over the years I paid the price of that love, thinking I might have permanently crippled my middle finger from impact of the trigger guard. Felt like I was the last dinosaur in silhouette to switch to Pachmayr Presentation. You hardly saw Silhouette Super or Silver Hornpipe on the steel shooting line without Pachmayr. A few still shooters preferred the slightly trimmer Uncle Mikeโs on their Supers, and that is an excellent grip. Made a drawing for Ruger of a Redhawk with curved backstrap, thinking it might be worth casting a frame to try. If my drawing raised an eyebrow, youโd need a micrometer to measure it. It would be difficult to configure on the existing Redhawk and I havenโt been willing to sacrifice my 5-1/2โ for the experiment. Today it would be easier to start with the grip spike on the Super Redhawk, where various curvaceous configurations of grip could be tried. No other double action rivals the Redhawk/Super Redhawk for high horsepower. Itโs the bank vault of double actions. David Bradshaw

Ronnie that skinny-barrel Redhawk is the best thing I've seen done with one. A blue one in 44 Mag would be like winning the Sixgun Lottery.

I HAD SOME OF THE PACHMAYR BULKY & UGLY GRIPS ON MY LINEBAUGH 45 COLT REDHAWK AND, FOR ME, THEY WORKED JUST FINE AND WERE 100 TIMES BETTER THAN FACTORY BUT MAN THEY MADE A PRETTY GUN LOOK UGLY. THEN BIGMUDDY OFFERRED ME A SET OF EAGLE ROSEWOOD TARGET GRIPS AT A REALLY GOOD PRICE. HE SENT THEM TO ME TO TRY AND TRY THEM I DID. THEY ARE LIKE THE B&U PACHMAYRS BUT PRETTY AND REALLY MAKE THE REDHAWK LOOK GOOD. APPARRENTLY THEY ARE TOO BIG FOR, OR FEEL TOO BIG FOR, A LOT OF REDHAWK SHOOTERS BUT I LOVE THEM.

Over this last year I've had a Redhawk project on the list for myself.
I just recently got four Redhawk cylinder and extractor blanks put together for client guns and the one for myself.
My Redhawk is going 500JRH The grip frame will see major reformation, with much material removed and quite a bit added. I'm going for a Bisley style frame shape. I'll be modifying the trigger and the hammer too, as well as the trigger guard.
Considering all the recent interest in the Redhawk and it's grip frame layout, I should do a build thread for it.

What I should have said, When Ronnie launches something heavier than a cast iron BB Chevy engine going a little slower than the speed of light from one of his guns and it doesn't come apart at a rapid rate of speed (aka Grenade) it's a safe bet that the gun design is sound, proofed, and will perform well with anything I may feed it. Ya'll must excuse me on my lack of vocabulary, I'm retired U.S.M.C. I ate my box of crayons, and pretty much a knuckle dragging Neanderthal. ๐๐๐
