Do you (or anyone else) know that Benchmade will sharpen and service your knife for free for the life of the knife? Benchmade ruined the last knife I sent in for lifesharp and I sold it. Way too heavy handed in the grind shop and left it .055 behind the edge, after eating 1/8" off the depth of the blade. They wrecked it, said they would fix it, then wrecked it worse the second time. My EDC is a Leatherman Skeletool - only 5 oz for a workable multitool (light enough to carry by the pocket clip in dress pants), great pliers, screwdrivers and a 154CM blade that holds an edge like a champ. I also like to add in a Zero Tolerance 350 from time to time, or a belt knife. My current go to belt knives are a Becker/Kabar BK16 or a Benchmade EOD Bushcrafter. Note that the stock sheaths on both of those need to be replaced if you are thinking about them.

I do my own sharpening. The key is to not let them get too dull. Keep them "touched up".

Guys, thanks for sharing all your thoughts on an EDC knife. I ended up purchasing an Opinel #8 knife for the Princely sum of $17.00 It had good reviews and for that price I figured I would give it a try. Well, two weeks in and this Knife is incredible ! Still RAZOR sharp after two weeks of everyday use. Light use, but just what I need.

Fwiw: i've grown more fond of the Fact. After lots of years using liner locks, i still haven't fully gotten used to the axis lock; but getting there. Used it last evening to field dress a small buck and it did just fine. Easy to clean too.

Have cleaned just two deer with folding knives and just don't like cleaning all the blood and guts out of the channels and have gone to a fixed blade for that duty now.
Remembered one arrest I made as a LEO for DWI in Texas. Guy had one of the Buck Large Stockman knives and said he had processed over 30 deer with that knife...

Does the Opinel have any kind of a lock?

Yes, Opinels lock. Sizes from key chain to machete. Carbon or SS. I've brought them up in other knife threads. Two live here. A good boys 1st knife, glove box, etc.. knife.

Think an Opinel 4" fillet knife will come to live here next. They say for bluegill and perch etc.. I'm thinking for brook trout and grouse, A folding trout/bird blade, Hopefully what a folding 4" Rapala would be like. The fillet knives are more slender than the regular offerings and better in the pocket I'm thinking. Opimels have a grand total of 4 parts. SIMPLE.

I’m not what you’d call a “knife guy”. Strictly utility tools for me. My EDC knife is a Case Equestrian. It has a hoof pick that gets used more than the blade.

Got the wife the smallest with the keychain, she loves it!

Does the Opinel have any kind of a lock? The #6 and larger have the lock. The smaller sizes don't. I wish the keychain sized knives had the lock so as to prevent them from unintentionally opening.

This thread jumped back to life!
I'm also not a 'knife guy'. When working, I carry a Leatherman. I used a Wingman for years, now I have a Free P2. For my use, it's really not worth the money over the Wingman. I get the same utility out of either. I say that, but the Wingman hasn't returned to my pocket since I got the Free...
For walking-around duties, I finally bought a pocket knife that wasn't cheap china junk: Benchmade Bugout. We'll see how it holds up, I'm trying to use it for about every task I can.

Very valid point. I don't either; but it is all i had on me and the fairly open design of it made it easier to clean than expected. Young deer without a lot of fat helped too.
