Having never had stag grips. Do they expand and shrink? The Gallagher I just got the grips are proud of the frame up to a 1/16” at the back curve. Any ideas?

Sir, I have elk, sambar, and red stag, the oldest being the latter two. I’ve experienced no shrinkage or warping. Red stag is my favorite, as it’s texture and visual nuances are more diverse, especially with age. The grain in red stag is also more pleasing, and while there is no replacement for ivory, I believe RS would be my second choice regarding strength, hue, age, grain, and grip. While RS is my preference, I have no complaints regarding strength or integrity with the other two.

I sure have been please with the elk I have. No shrinkage or expansion that I have noticed over the past few years. I've considered aging them but haven't jumped that fence yet. If yours are proud I guess you could sand them down a bit, I'm sure one of the makers of such could give you some tips on what to use and just how to go about it.

If you are interested in trying to fit them a little better, Sack Peterson has some tips and techniques on his website.

Sambar Stag, not"Sandbar"as some call it is no more as India has outlawed exporting. Actually I prefer elk stag for it smoother texture.

Elk stag can shrink. Long answer follows...
Sambar has a great reputation for hardness and stability, with Elk being generally understood as somewhat inferior by comparison. Its not really vastly inferior such that its not greatly materially different as generic antler. Thing is, Elk antler has big palmations at the top of the rack big enough to cut pistol grips from, and grip makers do render this material as a matter of raw material economics.
With Sambar, there are no big palmations and the only thing big enough to cut SA grips from is the base, and this is always the best cut of the antler. Generally then, Sambar cut SA panels will show as harder and more stable than a lot of the artisan made Elk panels made by artisans in the states. But an Elk antler base is or can be about as hard as a Sambar base, with thick calcified walls. I believe myself that Sambar color and figure is more beautiful.
There is I would say a propensity for palmation cut elk panels to shrink and curl. One can certainly still render out a good / decent set of Elk panels from palmations.

SACK: do you still have any SAMBAR? I talked to RAJ at Eagle grips two weeks ago. Their business started 50 years ago with grips made in India. Not only is Ivory and Sambar Stag basically banned it is also very hard to come by real pearl. So all of the classic materials from days gone by I pretty much gone.

I don't have that good a memory any more, but it might be worth checking if some of those were banned through an Obama Executive Order. Trump could do something about that.

I don't have that good a memory any more, but it might be worth checking if some of those were banned through an Obama Executive Order. Trump could do something about that. This I have gathered from various sources: The ban on the export of Sambar stag was placed by the government of India. The ban was put in place to protect THE BENGAL TIGER! Antler hunters went into the forest to collect shed antlers, which they found easily in some abundance. The tigers soon learned that where ever antlers were to be found, a meal, in the form of an antler hunter would soon be along. To protect themselves, these scavengers began going about armed and shooting such tigers. As habitat has shrunk, the tiger population has suffered, plus being shot by locals. Sambar stag is available from New Zealand and the Philippines from domestic herds, and why this has not been exported is a puzzle to me. It is found used in knife handles. Bob Wright

Thanks. Where does Red Stag come from? Europe? I just know I far prefer the look of India stag over Elk. I suppose we are having to settle for elk due to the many green peace laws. Just a matter of whats available. If ANYTHING becomes popular the gun haters that are always greenies are going to pursue laws against it. You know, stop the world to save a turtle or whatever. Many years ago when I was a kid a old neighbor friend gave me a Madalin that the inside was lined with some spectacular looking turtle shell. Some collector friend told me it was illegal. But he wanted it bad. Think he did trade me out of it.
