This is not my gun, but I have used this modification on a couple of different guns with good results. I did this to a 3 5/8" 45 Colt, along with thinning the ejector rod head, and I'm only about 1/16" shy of being able to push the empties completely clear of the cylinder. ***** Cannon..... good looking conversion. Clever means to increase extractor throw. Does the collar on the extractor button butt against the housing screw. Some of my rods have peened from recoil over the years. Curious if thre rod contacts howsing screw; and if arrangement holds up over time.

Some nice guns in this thread. I would like something similar built on a flat top .45 convertible that would closely mimic my little custom 3 1”2” single six. ETA: Well my pic didn’t post, use you’re imagination I guess😂

As to longevity, I don't have a good answer. The little Vaquero has held up fine so far, but it's got a fairly low round count. The second gun given that treatment was a pocket-sized Bearcat -- I don't have much of a concern with that one.

Yesterday's update: Time to cut the base pin! To get the ejector rod stroke I want I'll need every millimeter. After some cleaning up and adding a fingernail nick I'm pretty happy with how that turned out. An unexpected twist: with the increased ejector rod stroke, the flare on the ejector rod is actually hitting the cylinder wall. I'll have to polish that back a little bit. Re-profiled. I also removed 1.5mm from the ejector rod head. Every millimeter counts! Some reflections: I wish I'd taken just a little more time reprofiling the ejector rod flare. While it's perfectly functional, and nobody will ever see it but me, it's not as clean a job as I would have liked. I'll probably get a replacement and try it again at some point. I am an amateur, but I enjoy learning through doing.

Well, a big day today, you knew it was coming - time for the barrel to get shorter. You don't get two shots at this so measure measure measure! I'm shooting for three inches flat. My measurements say that I can still get 3mm of ejector rod action with a three inch barrel, which is enough for me to get a fingernail under the case rim. Can't get shorter than that without going sheriff style. This post is pic heavy, and I'll bold the text in between the pictures so it doesn't get lost. First thing I did was measure three inches with my calipers and wrap painters tape around the barrel so I'd have a clear visual marker. The edge of the tape is three inches. I found it was easier to clamp the muzzle end in the vise. I used a small piece of right-angle aluminum and a C-clamp to form a cutting guide, you can see I gave myself a little leeway. Mama didn't raise any fools.Time to get cracking - plenty of cutting fluid and a fresh hacksaw blade:Halfway!Almost there:Well hello there shorty:A hair uneven but nothing that some file work can't solve:Now for the coup de grace:I finished it up with 500 grit, 1000 grit, and 1200 grit sandpaper, then automotive rubbing compound and a polishing wheel on a dremel:I was shooting for three inches and I got...3.0685 inches. Good enough for me!Well fellows, it's not perfect but neither is any human endeavor. I'm pretty happy with it and while I'm not in any danger of being a gunsmith, I've enjoyed the heck out of the process so far. Now I'm waiting on my grip frame to arrive so I can fit it!

They make a barrel facing tool that squares up the barrel face to the bore. Supposedly easier than filing.
That’s short.

Nice work wish I had the skills but I am a little "gun" shy about cutting barrels etc. If you need a front sight recommend 2 Dogs I put one on my SBH.

Nice work wish I had the skills but I am a little "gun" shy about cutting barrels etc. If you need a front sight recommend 2 Dogs I put one on my SBH. I have no illusions about my skills - I am a rank amateur! Lots of qualified and talented gunsmiths on these boards and I'm not one of them. But I've always found that I learn from doing, even if it means making mistakes, and I enjoy it more than paying other people to do it for me, even if the results aren't as polished in the end. Many years ago when I wanted to learn to work on engines I bought a basket case Yamaha SR500 and took it apart and put it back together, every nut and bolt. When I wanted to learn to work on 1911s I bought a cheap Rock Island 1911. This is kind of the same thing. The 2 Dogs front sights look really nice, but I already ordered a new stock sight from Brownells that should be here tomorrow.
