I been Bitten by the .357 mag bug lately. Love my GP 100 5 inch, And been hankering for a 6 inch model 19. I decided to have a look at the S&W web site. There are some nice things there ! But they are just UGLY ! The R8 .357 is a great idea, Its an N Frame scandium frame steel cyl, And Barrel, 5 inch barrel with a fixed rail under the barrel, Holdes 8 rounds in Moon Clips. ! Very cool ideas, But why the Flattened sides on the Barrel with all the Billboard stuff ? There is a Stainless N frame 5 inch That has the 8 rnd moon clip feature , That really make sense. ! But again the Flattened sides to the barrel ! If they Were to just make a model 27 variant 8 shot moon clip with a slicked up action, and looked as close as possible to the old ones, I would be tempted.
But when my Carona Check comes i will likely get a 19-3, And i could get a used Black hawk too and still save a couple hundy ! ...tj

S&W HAS DONE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO THEIR 357 CYLINDERS, MORE HOLES, MOON CLIPS, NO FLUTES, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT THEY NEED MOST: LENGTH.

Have bought a lot of Smiths in the last ten years but not one new one....in the last 20 just two, a 357 PD and NG in .41 Magnum and I disliked them so them both went down the road.
As to the short cylinders on their N-frame .357s...they screwed that up from day one...why change now...
...and who needs 8 rounds in a revolver anyway...
For what Smith asks for their guns today one can buy a nice used 27 and have something to be proud of for the same money....
All my new gun revolver money goes to Ruger...at least they are listening...

As for the 8-shot .357----excepting revolver category combat competition adroitly displayed by a couple of Singleaction members shooting 8-shot N-frame 9mm’s----the times I carried a .357 Mag, BULLET PLACEMENT remained foremost in mind. The .357 Mag is a cartridge perfectly configured for the surgical strike. “Limited” to 6-shots, I did not feel helpless. Nor do I feel helpless with the J-frame, 5-shot Model 640 Centennial and its puny 2-1/8” barrel. Dig this: two days ago, the little M-640 took on a row of water jugs. A Speer Lawman .357 Mag 145 JHP blew up the first gallon, split the second, stopped in Jug #5, for 23” penetration! Expansion .490” x.450”. Recovered weight 99 grains. A friend has an L-frame Model 686 Plus, round butt 7-shot .357 with about 3-inches of barrel. As she is not a fan of recoil, she replaced factory wood with a neoprene wrap-around. A handsome revolver, traditional looking. Good SA & DA trigger. Good shooter. Given it is an odd-number S&W, stop notches are offset. Traditionist though I am, that compact 7-shot impresses me. As a revolver rises to my eye, my mind focusses to the sight, not the cylinder’s capacity. David Bradshaw

Could a sufficiently motivated shopper buy both a classic and a modern 8-shot and put the 8-shot cylinder in the classic gun? Is the barrel on the 8-shot moved 'up' to make room for 8 rounds?

Little 357 640 is a handful... Popped a ripe watermelon with this one loaded with Remington 125 Yellow jackets. Still remember what was left, virtually nothing!

Have yet to become one with the Ruger DA platform... Doesn't mean I don't buy them. 8 Shot RH snub breathes fire!

Been playing with a 7 shot S&W 686 Pro Series. Dang gun has a hitch in the DA gitalong. Plan to give it a few 100 more rounds to smooth out. If it doesn't this one will be trade fodder.

7 and 8 shot guns can have their place but really? If you need more than 6 go Glock!

Uncle Mike’s Boot Grip (shown), is a favorite on the M-442/642 aluminum frame Centennial in .38 Special. For .357’s in the M-640, I much prefer the wrap-around Uncle Mike’s Combat Grip. When the Performance Center was named years ago, all I ever saw come out of there were problems. I even talked to a guy in a gun store who was sending his Performance Center back for the 4th time. I commented "Beautiful weapon!" The guy responded "Yeah, but it cant hit water from the bottom of a lake." We talked more and he showed me his hogs, sheep, goats, deer, etc. taken with other handguns. I could not doubt his ability to shoot a firearm straight. I hope he got it sorted out.
I have a Performance Center 41 magnum that is scoped. With my dumb a$$ using it, it holds a three inch target at 100 yards with Hornady 210 grain HP's. This one wont be going anywhere anytime soon, but I have personally talked to others who weren't so lucky.

My luck was running good when I got my 686 Pro back from the mothership all on SW's dime. I asked for a smooth under 3 lbs. SA and under 8 lbs. DA. I said I would pay for an action job if required. I got exactly what I asked for. Silky smooth. No charge.
It may be the best DA pull of any I own or have shot. My advice is to it send it in before shoving it down the road.
My luck has not run so good with the last 2 new guns I got from Ruger. I still keep trying, but they are burning my patience at both ends.
