After I posted about the “.30-06 of Europe” I noticed that I was without the original .30-06 itself so I set out to remedy the situation and fell back on one of my favorite rifles. I don’t know why I keep buying and then selling these things. Every time I sell one I start looking for another one. The worst one I owned shot under 3/4” and the best was a .270 that shot under its caliber for 5 shots with cheap Remington ammo (REALLY should have kept that one). They are ugly but their stocks fit me like no other for offhand shooting. This one looked to good to pass up and danged if the didn’t offer layaway. I spent many an hour reading the Steyr catalog in the early 70s lusting for one of these (along with a Colt Sauer from Colt’s catalog and all the Weatherby) I have had quite a few of them but maybe I can hang on to this one. Steyr Mannlicher Model M Professional .30-06.

Shoot yeah! I got to fire a factory suppressed Steyr in Kosovo. Slickest rifle I have ever had in my hands. Unfortunately for me, Steyr is a rare bird in rural Victoria gunshops. If you ever get tired of it, let me know.

30-06 used to be one of my most prolific cartridges... I think I had 5 guns in that caliber... only one left that I'm keeping is a really nice 100th anniversary of the 30-06 model Remington 700, still have nice Garand, but the Garand goes on the next sell list... I am keeping a 30 carbine, 308, & a Czech bolt action 7.62 X 39, as well as a custom single shot Martini carbine in 30-30... along with the Remington 700 in 30-06 in the "round about 30 caliber", so I still have a couple 30 calibers I just couldn't let this stainless, fluted, engraved, nice walnut Remington 700 go... this is my 308

Pacecars,....I’ve got that same rifle in 6.5x55, they are very nice. Plus a SSG P2K, it’s one of my favorites as well.

I just bought a Kahles 6x42 scope with a #4 reticle. The package will be simple, rugged and accurate

Like your scope choice, seems scopes get over complicated these days, 6x42s are simple, rugged, and repeatable, they look the same every time you look through them.

Had a Steyr SSG .308 back in the 1980s...shot my only antelope with it on a hunt to Wyoming in 1987...wonderfully accurate rifle that I should have probably never sold...
As to an all-around rifle, bought one of the first 19" stainless Ruger GSRs released. Put a Rifle Basix trigger in to die for and a Shepherd 3.5-10 scope and I'm good out to 600 yards...
Took it on my recent cross-country trip and it is still behind the seat of the truck...

Nice rifle!
I've always wanted one of those Professionals too for some reason.
.30-06...mild to wild. While I don't typically hunt one, I set my gal up with a Blaser 93 in .30-06. 168gn Barnes for elk and a freaking awesome 125gn Nosler Accubond moving at about 3400fps for antelope. She's killed both with it. Good to be used to one gun.
I do have a full stocked Mannlicher–Steyr in .30-06 my Dad gave me after our forest fire. Said I "shouldn't be without a rifle". It's pretty beat up as it was his airboat rifle. Need to do some work with it...

I've always wanted one of those Professionals too for some reason. Me as well. And an SSG69. i've come close on them. But my next bolt action will probably be an older full stock model. Not getting any younger, they're not getting any cheaper. Time's running out!

Love the 30-06 as a kid in the 50s when big game seasons came around it was an 06 and a 30-30 usually Winchester sometimes Marlin that was in the fields and forests of Idaho. My family hunted exclusively with 06s, my uncles being WW2 vets. Love the caliber, it's simplicity, power and accuracy. Finn Aagard wrote an article on the 06 worth reading. Aagard was a pro hunter from Africa who loved the 06.

I think I read that article. Was that the one that he did on the “One rifle, one load”?

I recall an aagard article that was 30-06 based. He spoke of how the Scout concept didn’t work well for him and he preferred a scope with a bit more magnification 1-6x-ish. For being able to see branches and grasses in the way of the shot presentation. He used a “cheap” surplus Mauser and refurbed it into what he wanted, as I recall his reasons for disliking the Scout concept were met with consternation from Cooper, but given his background and experience Cooper couldn’t really call him out on his reasoning. He didn’t rely on one load for it though if I recall correctly,.......maybe? Trapr

Doomed by its own offspring, the .308 Winchester, aka 7.62x51mm. Further doomed by flatter shooting magnums. Problem is, millions grew into centerfire maturity on the .30-06, and hundreds of thousands, probably millions, continue with it. How many cartridges handle bullets from 110 grains to 220 grains with the same twist. Only thing I’ve killed with the Winchester 110 Spitzer was a car battery, raining battery acid and chunks of plate around a 15-foot radius. About the one thing a .30-06 hasn’t killed is the .30-30 Winchester, but it sure made a stab at it. Bolt rifles, Pumps. semi-autos, and machine guns have been designed around the .30-06 Springfield. Along with a stack of factory cartridges----most famously the .270 Winchester----and a heap of wildcats. I stopped hunting deer after deciding it was too much cartridge. So I switched to a Ruger dogleg M-77 in 6mm Remington and a Husqvarna European mountain carbine in 7x57mm. Both wonderful whitetail cartridges, although the 6mm refuses angles the .30-06 takes in stride. Just as the .30-30 helped train deer to step farther back from the .44-40, the .30-06 told em .30-30 distance isn’t far enough. The .30-06 had a date with the .45 ACP and they left the party together. The soiree was called World War One. Such a low pressure couple, always ready to compliment the work of the other. All around rifle? Reckon a search should start somewhere between the 6mm and .338. David Bradshaw

If pachyderms are on the menu I might go up a little to include .366 and pick the 9.3x62mm

If pachyderms are on the menu I might go up a little to include .366 and pick the 9.3x62mm While I concur, nobody seems to have told W.D.M. Bell that. He did an outstanding job with a 6.5X54 MS and a .275 Rigby/7X57mm Mauser. Actually, I believe Bell did his ivory hunting either before the advent of the .30-06, or very early in it's life.
