Bell also used a .318 Westley Richards on Elephants Yup, he was a (relatively) small-bore man.

I love the 30-06. I used a custom built m700 30-06 with 175 gr SMK @ 2,921 fps to shoot 600 & 1,000 yard matches back when I was able. My main hunting rifle is a custom m700 in 30-06. "But ain't many troubles that a man can't fix with $700 and a 30-06". www.molonlabe.net/Commentaries/jeff4_13.html

Bell chose his calibers based on availability of effective bullets. I believe he switched to the 7x57 when the bullet he preferred for his 6.5x54 became difficult to locate. Either way, both were effective for his chosen method with proper bullets. Gee!!! There’s that qualifier again, proper bullets and accuracy can allow a minimally effective round to be adequate.

I don't consider myself a "rifleman". For several decades, now gone, a 30-06 or 308 Sporter with a 4 or 6 power scope covered North America nicely. Now...don't don't even recognise some of the cartridges featured in new magazines. Sigh, my bad.

30,06 ! It does it all, About 1.5 years ago i met a guy across the river in Vancouver Wa, at a pawn shop to sell my 45/70, my old shoulder just wont take it anymore ! I should not have looked at the guns, but i did, (you would have too) I saw the letters FN on a tag, and a price of 350.00. Crap some of the money from my 45/70 never even got out to my jeep ! It was the cleanest old JC higgins model 50 i ever saw, real nice wood too ! I brought it home and dropped a Timney trigger in, (that trigger it came with is the worst chunk of engineering ever) And i had to dremmel out an insane amount of wood to get the thing back in the stock, But it is a great shooting do it all rifle. I put a 150 grain Speer hot core right into the face of a decent 3 point mule beer buck last year ( he was peeking round a bush !) 30 cal,s are great , i have a 1899 Model 94 src 30/30 A savage 99 and CZ 557, in .308 the 06 i just mentioned and a custom P14 in 300 H&H , and i usually hit what i point them at ! ...tj3006

" It was the cleanest old JC higgins model 50 i ever saw, real nice wood too ! "...my uncles rifle he used to hunt Maine whitetails with back in the 1950s and 60s... I ended up with the rifle after his death and wound up giving it to one of my best friend's sons for his HS graduation... It had been on loan to him so it just never came home.. He still hunts with it and he is now in his 40s..
