Don't underestimate the dangers of the Florida Cougar. Those rich old ladies can be vicious. Mostly it's grizzly sized black bear that's the biggest problem here in NC. 400+ pounds is not uncommon. 600+ pounders are taken every year. My usual bear country carry is a 500 Linebaugh Redhawk loaded with 400gr wfn at 1000fps. I wouldn't be uncomfortable with either the 44 or 45 shooting at least 300gr wfn at @1200fps.

Texas grizz aint very big either, but I can tell you from experience you can put bullet after bullet in a 150 lb. hog but if you don’t put them in the right place he’s gonna leak to death and that takes several minutes. Several minutes under a bear (or a hog) is not my idea of fun !

My big critter defense practice is about the same as my anti-personnel drills. I have been charged before and can tell you it happens freaky fast. Using the same gun and ammo you intend to carry, run Bill drills, the box, and the Mozambique. From experience I can tell you that is exactly how you will be shooting when something big comes to chew/claw/stomp/gore you to death. The Mozambique (failure to stop) drill is more than likely what your life will depend on. Two shots to slow or turn the charge and a cns shot to end it. Practice out to 25yds and keep your par under two seconds including the draw. Load light to start and work your way up to full power loads. It is possible to do with the single action but takes a bit more practice than with a double. Out of my Delta Elite, two seconds is no problem with my stiffest 10mm loads.

I bought a John Gallagher custom stainless Ruger new model Blackhawk in 44 magnum that someone round butted an XR3-Red grip on. WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING??? That thing HURTS! I am not into BDSM enough to enjoy shooting magnums out of it. Nice thing about a round butt FA is they give you enough grip to do it and still enjoy it.

101, do you have a pic of the round butt XR-3 grip? Just curious how it looks...

I am not into BDSM enough to enjoy shooting magnums out of it. Nice thing about a round butt FA is they give you enough grip to do it and still enjoy it. For my hand the round butt doesn't affect the recoil management at all. YMMV I have shot basically identical FA guns with identical loads and found the round butt didn’t change the recoil for me at all, with the shot barreled guns I probably like the round butts more than the standard grip frame although I don’t own one. Bob Baker explained to me the flared bottom the grip was to act as a sort of balance wedge when holding the gun to shoot, envision the gun balancing on you middle finger behind the trigger guard as you grip it and naturally it wants to tip forwards towards the barrel. The flair makes it so you don’t need to squeeze your lower fingers as tight since there is a natural wedge from the grip shape in your hand. The round butts work on short barreled guns because they are not a barrel heavy and have less of a tendency to want to tip forwards. At least that’s the theory as he explained it to me.

Have a ss bisley 4” in 510 gnr. Along with a 375 gr mountain mold wfngs , loaded to that 1200-1300 fps sweet spot with 296. Great shooter . So far all paper targets have been “dead right there” ! How much tougher could a charging brownie be?
