If you chalk your file before filing it is easier to clean. I use regular blackboard chalk. Then I brush the chalk out when I am done. I don't know if it would soak up moisture or not, but I would rather not take the chance since good files are expensive.

It is fitted ! I will save the polishing to one more skilled than I. But the fitting was not so hard and i am fairly pleased with my work. I will wait for my 3rd hand to arrive before I dive into reassembly...tj

Hey Fellas with the Big paws. I have been working on the BIG DRAG here. Its a Super Black Hawk Extended .300 down and shaped up a smidge to the rear. She sports a Dragoon trigger guard which has been enlarged and will accommodate a standard Black Hawk trigger. Not to Mention been moved forward a smidgin to increase knuckle room! I also have a version which uses the Bisley Trigger as well and its really got some serious room. I love the look of the Ruger SBH Dragoon but as you can see it does not fit my hand very well. Knuckle Smackin Son of a gun! First pic is a compare of the steel Ruger version and then the all New BIG DRAG. Notice i can get all my fingers on the front strap comfortably. With room to spare. I love it. R

Close on the 1st attempt, I got he back together but the hammer would not cock. Not sure why , but on closer inspection, the pawl, was not sticking though the rear face of the window as it should, so I tore her back down. I know I bit more than I did this morning so the day was not wasted by any means. I will know what to look for when I try again. ...tj

Good job TJ, stay at it. If you get frustrated, set it down and walk away for a bit.

I can not do this, Three hours yesterday and three today, and now I wrecked the pawl spring. I am just no good at stuff like this, I appreciate all your help though. I might try again cause I am a tenacious old fart, but I think it is pretty much hopeless. Need to order the part, ... TJ

Don't sweat it TJ, parts is parts, their all replaceable, you can't hurt anything, considering ordering all of the action springs and plungers for backup, their fairly cheap and you want to get all you can in one order, on small parts, for shipping cost reasons. We all started just like you, losing or breaking small parts, this just means your learning, it take a few times to figure how to hold your tongue just right while you slip in this pin or that spring. It only goes together one way, after awhile, you'll just be able to feel if something is wrong. We were all you at one time, you can do it, keep your manual open while you work, it helps to have a visual reference. Of course there's always the , if it doesn't fit, get a bigger hammer method too. Haha, I've been there too.

Not using a manual, I am watching a guy on you tube step by step. And after about 10 teardowns I still am watching the video every step. But it is encouraging to know breaking and losing parts is not uncommon. I should have known that. If not there would be no Brownell's or Numerich. When I get Ronny's 3rd hand it will be easier, I might spend another 3 hours on it, but at some point i need to go out into the sunshine and do some shooting. I think it is pretty darned hopeless. . But the experience has taught me a little about how the thing works, The cylinder lock and the pawl make sense now, but i have no clue what most of the other parts do. ...tj

TJ, you are doing fine. Dont sweat a simple pawl spring....sure you have to order it and replace it. But order two or three and keep them as spares. Hey! I simply replaced a grip frame the other day and upon reassembly found that I could spin the cylinder with the loading closed....well thats not right! I knew exactly what was missing but wasnt sure how it happened (and still dont). No biggy, I disassembled the grip frame and somehow the the cylinder bolt latch spring and plunger fell out of the grip frame. I repositioned everything and reassembled. And it operated as expected. Bottom line.....dont sweat it. The people on this forum will help you the best they can! Keep at it! You can do it!
