Well I finally jumped off in the deep end. I've been shooting 44mag, 45 Colt, 357 Maximum for 40 years but I have been thinking about a BFR in 500 JRH for a few months now. Yesterday I found a fairly good deal on a used (barely) one with a 5.5" barrel. I got the gun with box, docs and original rubber grips, black micarta grips, Burris scope, box of Buffalo Bore ammo, Harbor Freight chop saw, E-bay cutting jig, 60 rounds of brass and a box of 440gr cast bullets for less than the price of the gun new. I can't wait to get it to the range! Depending on the outcome I may be sending it to Mr. Huntington for the grip mod soon afterwards

Great score! Yes, the grip needs to be addressed, but you got a great deal!

Great deal there! I would SERIOUSLY consider sending it in to JRH for the grip mod, or back to MRI for the "bisley" grip upgrade. I can't personally speak to the JRH grip mod, but I DO know his work is top notch and just the number of guys on here that swear by Jacks grip mod is enough to convince me. But I DO love the "bisley" version grip for the BFR a lot. Love mine and wouldn't change it for anything! I prefer it over my Ruger Bisley grips to be honest. Either will make a very good gun--a great gun, in my opinion. For sure WAY more fun! You will love it! Very soon coming into my family to join my 475/480 (pictured) will be a BFR 500JRH with Bisley grip! I am sure it won't be my last BFR either!

I did. Actually been watching it change hands several times over the past few months while I researched the cartridge

Haha go figure, Well I was the original owner, purchased new from Buds and yes I’ve shot only around 120rds. By the looks of the ads, someone bought some Buffalobore ammo they didn’t even finish up (I bet those cast are my 440gr TC with green lube). Can’t speak for the other owners but I babied that gun after each range session. It’s a tack driver and I’m sure you’ve read all the posts extolling the JRH. You’ll have a blast at the range!

I think it’s been shot 9 times total through the last 3 owners! It’s still in spotless condition

231, Unique and Titegroup make these guns very pleasant to shoot. Spoke to Jack Huntington some time back and he took a Bison with a very mild load of WW231.
For the Handloader, the only limitations are easy to overcome.
In my opinion you bought the King of Big Bores. Enjoy your gun...

It looks like you got a heck of a deal on a complete shooting package. I shoot my 500JRH with a set of wood grips Zane made for me. The gun is very SBH-ish in it's recoil mannerisms. Its extra weight helps to mitigate the bigger caliber and heavier lead. I have entertained the idea of the JRH grip mod but it's not a necessity if you avoid the highest level loads. 400-440 grain bullets at 1000 to 1100 fps are bad medicine on most critters.
