How complicated will this modification be? Is it as simple opening up the hammer slot in the grip frame?

Most remove the hump. I like to leave a little so that the hammer fits flush between the ears. As for easy, the right tools, time & skill, factor in.

The hard part for me is FINDING a Bisley hammer for a Single Six/Seven. Never see one. The metal moving part is simple.

The unicorn that I am stalking is a Bisley hammer for an OM Single Six. Strictly a fabrication job at this point.

I’ve got a OM Single Six Bisley Hammer, just no picture readily available, yes it is a chop cut rebuild. It’s going into a Magnum Marked Single Six chopped to 3.6” & Brass Birdshead. In looking for a picture came across this picture that shows the cut line. Other 2 hammers look standard and NV.

If Ruger would just offer the modified hammer for the normal frame as a replacement part...

I’ve modified several bisley hammers to fit regular grip frames and I’ve used a dremel to get most of the metal shown on the sample shown above then finish it with a good file.

Markbo, A few minutes with a good file or two, then wrap the file with progressively finer grades of sandpaper until you get the shine you want will do it. You’ll spend more time test fitting the hammer to make sure you don’t take off too much (try to make the hump on the hammer match the ears on the grip frame) but do take off enough to function without any binding. If you’ve never used a good file, get one and practice a bit on scrap steel. Doggone Bisley hammers are getting way too hard to find so take care! Tim

If it helps any, Ruger's part number for the stainless Bisley Single Six/Seven hammer is KBR04000B. I think you would also need a Bisley trigger #KBR03901. Two or three years ago, when I was converting my Single Seven to a Bisley grip frame, I had found all the necessary parts, except for the hammer. I called Ruger customer service, explained what I was trying to do, and that I was having trouble finding a hammer, and they sent me one, no charge.

If you just open the slot in the grip frame, it doesn't look right. Modifying the hammer looks better. I decided I don't like that either. * ETA: Since two people have recently made note of this post 4+ years later, I noticed I left some info out. I figured I'd add it for the future. That modified Bisley hammer was done wrong/poorly, which is why it was laying around spare. It wasn't ground well, not following the normal curvature it should have, so that makes it look much worse. That grip is a standard XR3-RED grip, rounded off and a wood filler added. They were all extra experimental boogerd parts.

I'm always buying spare parts even when I don't "need them." Especially Bisley hammers & triggers. Just last week, I went to put up a few more hammers I'd bought,, and was having to sort them out by size, & if they were blued or stainless. Lo & behold,, I discovered a Single-Six Bisley hammer I had that had been "forgotten." Now I need to figure out what gun I'm gonna put it in.
But in modifying a gun or hammer,, look at the pics above. ALWAYS modify the hammer. It's not a hard job,, and looks so much better.

It's an old thread but this one answers the question for my Birdshead .45.
I knew the Bisley hammer in a BH needed trimming but I was not sure about the birdshead.
