I chose to add a 500 JRH in both the 5.5" and 7.5". My reasoning was hunting in Africa. The law requires a minimum of 8" when hunting with a revolver. The MI 7.5" is measured forward of the receiver, so barrel is actually 8.2". What country are you referring too? South Africa doesn't stipulate a minimum barrel length, only that it is equipped with an optic of some sort. I took my 5 1/2-inch BFR there and Jack Huntington used his 4 5/8-inch BFR over there.

I was there in May and I just went back over my SAPS 520 form (see photo) and there is nothing there about barrel length at all. Did you use a meet and greet? That may have been an old law that is no longer in effect.

Did use a Meet and Greet. They said new law just instated since the 2018 trip. They measured the revolver barrels at Customs, so I dunno...
The PHs were fighting it. In S.A. Money rules, so maybe gone away?

5.5 as well, thats what I'm going with on the 475 but would do that on the 500 JRH as well. I always was tempted to have mt 480 SB cut to the ER housing, it just seemed longer than personal liking. I hope I am happy with the 5.5" in the bigger framed BFR, as like was said they measure that from the frame, not the cylinder so just over 6" from the cylinder. Wgich out of several FA83's in 454 over the years my favorite was a 6", still kick'n myself fer parting with that one!
I have never seen a dramatic change in speed from 5.5" to 7'5" even with the speedy 454. I have also never seen it as an absolute on accuracy, as I have cut down barrels on big bore revolvers before and seen some give better accuracy, some no change, and some take a negative turn to accuracy from before. I cannot support this but I would think this could be compensated with load development, but had not had these guns long enough, or done enough development before the changes to make a positive statement either way on that.
But in a whole what I am saying is I think length is more a thing of what sights, uses, and personal preference, and not all that subjective to performance. JMPO

JMPO I have a 5.5 production 500 JRH bought a few months ago and a recent Precision Center 475 Linebaugh in 4 5/8. They both measure from forcing cone like normal. Pretty sure all the new ones are coming that way now.
