My black rifle looks like a Copper Head. The rest just look like this. Very nice collection, Tom! Are they all Springfield Armory M1As?

Two Springfields one Norinco. With a trigger change and a little shimming on the guide rod pin the Norinco will shoot withe the springfields.

Mr. Axe...I spent a year agonizing about that very thing...I'm lucky enough to get to shoot pretty much everything, plus to sit down with some serious gentlemen who were evaluating new 7.62 semis for some of our elite troops. After much hand-wringing, I ended up with a plain vanilla FAL from DS Arms. I liked the FNH FNAR, which is crazy accurate but with expensive proprietary magazines; I liked the M1A SOCOM but agree on the stock...I was surprised at how well the short barrel shot.
I figured the FAL is what it is...debugged technology, cheap magazines, zillions of parts, more accurate than me...

Just my opinion mind you, but if I were going to have a "black rifle", it would be the lighter AR-15 A3 carbine platform with a 6.8 SPC bolt and a custom 16.5" barrel chambered in .375 Rimless SuperMag. It might not be much past 200 yards, but it sure would knock the snot out of anything between here and there.

Don't forget the 450 Bushmaster.... How does the FN LAR based semi like the US mil spec 172 grain bullet? Like the specs for the .223 and the 5.56 the .308 and 7.62x51 are not the same. Traded for a 7.62x51 .308 Grendel years back that I remember a lighter bullet weight being marked on the gun... Seems like I remember that my USGI issue 7.62 Lake City match ball would not fit in the box magazine.

Axe, the FAL I had shot 147 and 155gr bullets real good. The heaviest bullets I could get it to stabilize was a 168 BTHP. Bill

In 308 Black Rifles (and some dark brown ones) I've had or still have: M1A, HK 91, AR10, and FAL.
I shot the M1A in Highpower for several years. I like them, but am not nuts over them. I am a Garand lover, so should like them better than I do. When I switched to the AR for matches, I've hardly shot my M1A. With a regular GI action (not lugged) there isn't a lot of contact surface where the action meets the stock. As a result, I'd have to re-bed it every other year because the bedding would get beat down and I'd get zero shift. Mine always worked and never broke anything, although I did see them go down at matches. The Garand-type trigger is hard to beat.
The HK 91 was OK in some ways and poor in others. It would eat anything fed to it. Accuracy was really good if you could manage the trigger. Things are cheaper for them now but everything then like scope mounts or mags was expensive (this was before all the G3s got surplussed out). The rear sight needed the tool to adjust, which was a pain. Recoil was the worst of any .308 semi I've shot. Brass took a beating, but not as bad some would have you believe. Trigger was terrible. Controls were a little clumsy.
The FAL I like. They always looked long to me, but don't seem so bad when actually using it. It's a really slim rifle. The trigger could be better, but could be a lot worse. The gas adjustment is kinda nice, since you can set it light to be easy on brass or heavy for really positive function. Mine is a Century L1A1, and apparently one of maybe three that worked well. The parts are really worn and obviously saw a lot of use, so I imagine that is the problem with the Centurys. Considering this wear, I'm honestly impressed that mine works at all and consider it a testament to the design that it does. I was looking at new DSA 58s about a month ago and would have got one, but found a Colt New Service I had to have and there went a chunk of the money.
The AR10 I have is an ArmaLite. It is very accurate, and has the least recoil of any of the .308s I've had. The trigger is pretty good. Ergonomics are great. I like it except for having doubts about it's longevity. Nothing has failed on mine, but it looks a little frail in places. Unlike the others, there is no service history to judge it by.
The .308 semi I shoot and use the most is a somewhat odd choice. I have a couple of .308 Garands, and use one a lot. Without the magazine sticking out, it's a lot handier than the others, even if it does weigh more than some. The accuracy is there, it's plenty rugged, the sights are good, the trigger is good. The clips are plentiful and easily carried, loaded or empty. It's my do-all rifle. It rides in the truck all the time. I shoot 3-gun matches with it. I even used it in a carbine class last year. There, among the gee-whizzed ARs stood lumpy old me and my .308 Garand. I had some concerns about being able to keep up, since it's a lot to swing around for three days but I did fine. I can guarantee I did not have the heaviest rifle in the class. At least my brass was easy to find at class end.

I see you folks have not forgotten who your neighbors are! Axe, I have an Ishapore #2A that I can spray with black stove paint if you absolutely, positively must have a "black rifle". ;D

I'm partial to the FAL. I'm still hoarding and putting together $99-$150 G1 and Imbel parts kits.
