Had a nice visit yesterday with Mr. Linebaugh. He was traveling but said to call in a few days when he was home and he'd look up the information on my gun. He passed on some great loading information, much of it I had seen here but it was great to hear it from him and get his input. He is a big fan of 16 grains of HS 6 and a 450 grain Keith bullet lit by WLP primers. I have a partial one pounder of it and it looks like an eight pounder is in the near future. He also recommended 2400 and 4227 for our cold country up here. He is a great guy.

mart,
Did John give any velocity estimates on the 16 grain of HS 6 load?
Where are you at with the cold temps?

He said that load should run 1000fps. Iβve hunted in 56 below for a week but donβt like to make a habit of it. Our regular fall hunting season runs like any other northern US area. 30s to 60s. My hunt next month could be 40 above or 40 below. Iβve seen it at both in that area in November.

Have you had it out shooting yet Mart ?? Beautiful loading blocks !! I wonder if we will see a 411/348 model 71 in your future π You've already got the loading blocks for it .;-) It can be left handed , And ! You've already got bullets for it. Or perhaps a 50 Alaskan. ππ

That HS6 load is a great load, but it's pretty easy to get a double charge in those big cases. Also don't forget trail boss if you just want some trigger time without all the recoil. I used a 2400 load from John that did about 1100 that was accurate in the guns I tried it in.

I like to use a mag primer with 4227 and I actually have used a mag primer with 2400. Did John say which he preferred with these powders? Or what he felt worked best?

No, he didn't say. I need to call him back. He told me to call again in a few days as he was traveling and when he was home could give me the particulars on my gun. I'll ask him about the magnum primers with 4227.

Mart, I get 995fps with 16gr of HS6, and 1030fps with 16.5gr, but both are with 410gr bullets and shot from a 500max cylinder. I get 1005fps with 16gr HS6 and a 465gr bullet. Both are accurate and easy shooting, I'm hoping to use the same loads in my 500L Sheriff when it arrives.

I have in writing from JL that he uses WLP primers for all his 500L loads using 4227, 2400, H110, LilGun, Titegroup and HS-6, under 410 to 468 grain cast.

I hope to get out this week or next for some more range time with it. My Mihec 525 grain mold just arrived yesterday and the two from LBT should be inbound any day. I already have a 400 Whelen so a 411/348, while interesting, would be kind of redundant for me. I've wanted a 50 Alaskan for many years but have never moved on it. I might still build a 50 AK one of these days if I found a beater 348. Recently I've been toying with the idea of one of the Uberti 1876 50-95s. Kind of heavy but cool guns.

Don't overlook a good Marlin, a bit lighter in weight and makes for a nice carrying gun when it's in your hands.
I like mine, 350gr - 465gr get run at 1850fps to 1900fps, 530gr hasn't been loaded yet.

Since JL mentioned IMR4227 and 2400 per colder weather, my initial thought too was, did he mention mag primers ? Will await clarification.

Use Remington 2 1/2 or CCI 300. Your results with WLP unless you've got the older silver colored ones, will be rather dismal.
