I may be crazy! Everything I've run across says it's to help water drain faster from the firing pin channel if it gets submerged.

Problem solved! No need to hang anything off the side of the boat, you get your cardio workout for the day and if things go right (or possibly wrong), you'll get your daily adrenaline dump as well!

Aahh..! Yup, had been my impression that swapping out that "cup" for a split or two piece, would allow it to fire underwater, more than once.

Don't need one... Sharks and I have an understanding...they stay off my lawn and I stay out of their ocean. Both sides have been pretty good at keeping their side of the bargain for over 62 years...I see no reason to renegotiate the terms of the peace accords at this point.
