Has anyone here have gout? Developed it in my right big toe recently. It is beyond unpleasant. I have broken one of the metatarsals in my foot 4 or 5 times. I have torn an ACL and had it replaced with part of my hamstring. I have a torn bulged disc in my neck. Broken and dislocated bones in my hand. Other injurys I can't even list without taking up too much time. Gout is beyond broken bone pain.

Not sure, do have big toe pain at times, not severe. I guess my grand dad had it. Doc just told me I have mild to moderate degenerative disc disease, but like he said, just about everyone over 60 has it to some degree, even if they don't know it. My pain level is not too bad.

You may have already seen this link, or several like it: www.webmd.com/arthritis/tc/gout-topic-overview#1Have gone through many that you have listed, but not Gout. I would recommend that anyone who ever had Chickenpox, consider the Shingles vaccine. I'm not real big on vaccines, but Shingles can be a bit uncomfortable.

First time I had a flare up. I wanted to cut my foot off. It's a Uric acid build up. It's also, a form of arthritis. The flare up,can occur at pretty much any joint. I get it in the toe or one of the knees. They have meds for it, poor mans meds is Prilosec.Cut back on red meat, drinking, shellfish. I learned to eat certain stuff in moderation. For me it was red meat four nights a week, along with excessive beer drinking. I find if I drink plenty of water. To flush my system, it prevents flare ups from occurring more often. There's plenty to read up on gout. I recommend you, go to a doctor get blood work done, as well. There's a list of foods they say to avoid also. Personally, you'd be eating like a rabbit if you follow it. In time, you'll figure out what triggers the flare ups. Not eating all day, than eating a large meal can trigger it. Try to have a steady eating habit as well. Don't wait on Doctor visit, I was stubborn, and suffered more flare ups before going. BTW! They don't know the cause of the acid build up.

I got that shot last year, several in my family have had shingles. If you have a Shingles outbreak near your eye, there is a very real danger of losing the sight in that eye.

Advice from your local drug dealer. Some have good luck with cherry extract capsules. If that doesn't work there are a few prescription drugs (uloric and colchicine) that work to help prevent as well as treat flare ups.
If you are over 62 and haven't had your shingles vaccine I strongly suggest you look into it. Many Medicare part d insurances will cover it because they realize an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Don't wait til,you have a case of shingles to decide if it is worth it.

I have both them meds. Refuse to take the one that can turn your skin yellow. Have enough going on without, having to see if a side affect turns me yellow.

I have been dealing with gout for over 20 years and you are so right, when it kicks in, the pain is quite exquisite. The doc gave me a steroid I believe to get over the first episode, and suggested a diet to prevent future attacks. I tried the diet for a while but, for me, was just about impossible to follow and more attacks occurred even when I was following it pretty well. He finally prescribed Allopurinol and the attacks stopped completely. Over the years, I would get to feeling like it had gone away, stop the Allopurinol and, ...sure enough, ...get another attack. After going through that a few times I decided I might as well resign myself to taking it for life. I do have to get checked every six months for possible kidney problems but no ill effects at all so far.
Good luck, Shakey

1)Stop drinking alcohol.
I took Allopurinol for flare ups only, not all the time. Works like a dream though.
Don't know where you live but my Doc said that between my tendencies with the hooch and living out West, I was dehydrated which was greatly contributing.
Red hot heat pain I haven't thought about in a long time....
Good luck!

I had a bout with gout that must have been like twenty five or thirty years ago. I agree with the others in that there is no pain quite like it. I had it in my big toe and in my heel. The night it hit me, it woke me up in bed. I laid there suffering and finally got up and put a tightly laced tennis shoe on that foot and stayed up all night walking in circles. That offered only a little bit of relief. If I laid back down it hit me with that throbbing pain again. It felt like it was with every pulse beat. If I remember right, it was Prednisone that the doctor gave me and it finally went away after a few days. I thank the Lord that I have never been bothered with it again. If I remember what the doc told me, gout is caused by too much uric acid in the joints. It builds up in the joints and crystallizes. Just the sound of sharp crystals in the joints sounds painful.

Gout is no fun. Had it in the thumb of my shooting hand. One of the best things you can do is drink plenty of water. Not just a 12 or 24 ounces a day but twice that. The water will help with many other things also. Learn to drink water with your meals. Learn to love the taste of water. It is your friend. And watch that red meat.

One quick note on gout, my older son suffers from it. He and his wife have been staying with me for a while after moving back to town from an outstate job that didn't work out. Anyway, he started having some serious attacks immediately after moving down here. As near as we can figure, the trigger was hamburger of all things. Some prepackaged hamburger seems to contain a high percentage of organ meat. You really can't tell the difference in taste, but someone with gout could be in serious pain a day or so after consuming it. We switched to ground round, or even sirloin, and the attacks gradually diminished to the point of being a rarity again. I guess my bargain hamburger wasn't a real bargain after all.

Hopefully it wasn't food triggered. Had a ribeye smothered with morels for dinner the night before. It would be a sad life if I could not enjoy such things.

Taking my two boys hiking today to a fire tower I rented. This will be my 4 year olds first backpacking trip. It is only a 1.5 miles so if my toe acts up I won't have too suck it up for very long.
